A method of working coal seams [in which the] seam is removed in one operation by means of a long working face or wall, thus the name.

The workings advance (or retreat) in a continuous line which may be several hundreds of yards in length. The space from which coal has been removed ... is either allowed to collapse (caving) or is completely or partially filled or stowed with stone and debris.

La longue taille peut être schématiquement définie comme une galerie en couche d'une longueur de 100 à 250 m en général, qui se déplace parallèlement à elle-même dans la veine, en étant constamment reliée à deux autres galeries ou voies qui lui sont perpendiculaires. Ces voies servent à toutes les communications entre la taille et l'ensemble de l'exploitation : arrivée d'air et du matériel, circulation du personnel, évacuation du charbon produit.

Three main systems of methane drainage have been developed :(1) the cross-measure borehole method which consists of boring holes from 2¼ to 3¼ inches in diameter and 150 to 300 feet in length, into the strata above or below the seam, generally close to the working face. This method has the advantage of being suited to a wide variety of conditions and does not require another seam within reasonable distance above or below the seam to be drained, or the use of solid stowing;(2) the superjacent roadway system in which boreholes are drilled from a roadway situated above the seam being worked, the drainage of the methane then taking place from this roadway; and(3) the pack cavity system in which corridors are left and supported in the goaf as the face advances, and from these firedamp is drawn off.

Le captage du grisou est réalisé en creusant de longs trous, soit à partir de la surface, soit à partir des galeries de reconnaissance du gisement, en direction des couches de charbon. A plough-type machine hauled by endless chain at a speed of 6 f. p. s. The ram scraper is pressed towards the face by the tension of the return strand, the return sheave being located inbye for this purpose. The minimum seam thickness is 10 in. in manless(unsupported) faces, and 14 in. in timbered faces; maximum length of face 130 yd; suitable gradient 25-70°.(Could be developed for 0-25° gradients by assistance to flow of coal). A three-shift working continuous mining machine.
