In general, two files are input to an automated coding system. One file contains either the survey responses or administrative files, which are to be coded, referred to as the input file. The other file is called the reference file, which contains the predetermined code set. Then, for each record from the input file, a search is performed in the reference file. If a match is found, the code in the reference file is assigned to the corresponding record from the input file. Otherwise, the code is left blank. Some of the advantages of an automated coding system are that the process increasingly becomes faster, consistent, and more economical.

En général, deux fichiers sont entrés dans un système de codage automatisé. Un fichier, appelé le fichier d'entrée, contient soit les réponses à l'enquête, soit les fichiers administratifs qui doivent être codés. L'autre fichier est appelé le fichier de référence, qui contient l'ensemble de codes prédéterminé. The Mycroft project provides a collection of search plugins for Mozilla-based web browsers. The open source project is hosted on Mozdev. org and has been in existence since 2000. The project is named after Mycroft Holmes, the fictional older, smarter, and less ambitious brother of Sherlock Holmes, as a reference to Mycroft being based on Apple Computer's Sherlock search technology. A search plug-in provides the ability to access a search engine from a web browser, without having to go to its website first. Technically, a search plug-in is a small text file that ’tells’ a computer what information to send to a search engine and how the results are to be retrieved.

It is important to realise that computers are a tool through which education is mediated. Hence, it will be more suitable for some teaching and learning tasks than others. Now education is increasingly becoming multi-modal with the use of videoconferencing and multimedia learning programmes, and the use of online databases, search engines and hypertext/mark-up language for research. In terms of communication, face to face communication is being replaced and/or enhanced through synchronous chat and videoconferencing as well as through asynchronous means such as 'shared whiteboards’, ’discussion boards’ and ’file sharing’. It has now become possible to overcome the barrier of time and space through the development of this new technology.

When you use the same file over and over again, writing, rewriting, saving, and deleting parts of it on the same disk, the file becomes fragmented. That means that although you can’t tell, your operating system is storing all the data from that file as separate packages of information, distributed on different parts of the disk. Although fragmentation does not lose the information contained in the file, it does eventually slow down access to the file itself, because the OS must search the whole disk to create the sum of the file's parts. Defragmentation collects all those parts into one stream of data again, speeding up your system.
