An Advisory Committee on Assistive Devices has been formed to provide the Minister of Industry, with advice on how to support the advancement of assistive technologies in Canada. The Committee's first meeting was held in Ottawa, October 31-November 1. This committee(ACAD) meets three times each year to provide input to the Minister of Industry on issues dealing with the assistive technology industry. It also provides input on the departmental planning process to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are taken into account. For example, it was on the recommendation of the ACAD that the Information Highways Applications Branch included accessibility as a criteria in the applications process for the Community Access Program. Un Comité consultatif des appareils et accessoires fonctionnels a été formé afin de conseiller le ministre de l'Industrie, sur la façon de soutenir l'avancement des technologies fonctionnelles au Canada. La première réunion du Comité au eu lieu à Ottawa les 31 octobre et 1er novembre 1996. In 1982, the Native Affairs Secretariat was created in response to increasing urbanization of Manitoba's Aboriginal population and related requirements for government services. The Secretariat served as an advisor, particularly on Aboriginal social and economic issues, and reported to the Minister Responsible for Native Affairs and the Native Affairs Committee of Cabinet. Responding to growing emphasis on self-governance, the Native Affairs Secretariat participated in tri-partite negotiations between the province, Canada and Aboriginal community representatives. In 1999, the department was renamed Aboriginal and Norther Affairs. The Secretariat was amalgamated with the Agreements Management and Coordination Division and was renamed Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat. The north walk of Lincoln's Inns Fields was renamed Canada Walk, 30 October 1945. The site was rededicated by the Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien and the Mayor of Camden, Alderman Ray Adamson, 14 May 1998. In a building opposite at 20 Lincoln's Inn Fields was the Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Great Britain during the Second World War. This HQ provided central support to some 85, 000 Canadian personnel who served in 48 RCAF Squadrons and with numerous RAF units.
