The shovel shear test provides information about the location where the snow could fail in shear. It is best applied for identification of buried weak layers and does not usually produce useful results in layers close to the snow surface. Soft snow near the surface is better tested with the tilt board and the shear frame or an improvised version of this tilt test. 3, record 31, English, - shovel%20shear%20test

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Easy... Moderate... Hard... 4, record 31, English, - shovel%20shear%20test

[Avalanche Victim Search. ] The initial search involves a fast scan of the entire area where victims might be found(that is, from the last seen point, within the perimeters of the avalanche, and in the deposition areas). It concentrates on likely areas of burial in addition to listening for transceiver signals and looking for clues on the surface. Initial searchers should be equipped with transceivers, probe, and shovel as well as a few wands if available. Do a visual search for clues on the surface(that is, hand, foot, clothing, and equipment). Call out occasionally and listen for responses from victims. Pull any items found out on the snow to see if a victim is attached. Mark the location of found items and bring them to the attention of the rescue leader. Listen carefully for transceiver signals in these locations.(If victims were not wearing transceivers or if is unknown whether transceivers were used, quickly probe the area around found items.) If a transceiver signal is found, carry out a transceiver search. If there is more than one person buried, the initial search continues to look for visual clues, etc. 2, record 35, English, - visual%20search%20for%20surface%20clues

Cornice tests... they have been standard techniques among ski patrollers, helicopter ski guides and especially climbers for decades. Cornices are the bombs of the backcountry. Simply find a cornice which weighs significantly more than a person and knock it down the slope. A cornice the size of a refrigerator or a small car bouncing down a slope provides an excellent stability test. The smaller the cornice, the less effective the test. You can kick the cornice, shovel it or best of all, saw it with one of those new snow saws which mounts on the end of a ski pole. 1, record 56, English, - cornice%20test

Le déclenchement provoqué ne date pas d'aujourd'hui. Shrinkage stoping may be termed a "classic" mining method, having been perhaps the most popular... It has largely been replaced by mechanized methods... It is applicable to mineral deposits with regular boundaries and steep dip hosted in a competent rock mass. Also, the blasted ore must not be affected by storage in the slopes... Its most prominent feature is the use of gravity flow for ore handling : ore from stopes drops directly into rail cars via chutes obviating manual loading... This shovel is widely used for stone loading. Various models are available to meet particular conditions of track gage, mine car size or headroom available. The loading bucket, mounted on a rocker arm, is pushed forward into the pile of debris; the rocker arm is then actuated to swing the loaded bucket over the rocker carriage and to deliver the bucket load into a mine car or, in the case of one of the models, on to a variable-speed belt conveyor which in turn delivers into the mine car. The machines operate on a rail track and, swivelling on the carriage, can sweep across the width of the heading. On raising the bucket for discharge, the device is self-centering. 1, record 79, English, - Eimco%20rocker%20shovel
