There is good evidence that yeast hexokinase, which phosphorylates glucose with the terminal phosphate of ATP, involves the induced fit theory. X-ray diffraction studies show that the binding of both the sugar and the nucleotide causes extensive changes in tertiary structure. Also, the binding of the nucleotide to one form of the enzyme is promoted by sugar binding. These results are in accord with earlier solution studies on the ATPase activity of the enzyme in the absence of glucose.

In the case of enzymes, it is dependent on temperature, as in the case of ordinary chemical catalysts, but the activity is lost at temperatures above a certain limit due to the denaturation of enzyme protein. Therefore, it is considered that studies on temperature dependence caused by immobilization may provide useful information for comparisons of enzymes and chemical catalysts.

Westinghouse Lunar Color Camera. Used on Apollo's 12 & 14. The camera was mounted inside the Modularized Equipment Stowage Assembly(MESA) in Quad 4 of the Lunar Module(LM) Descent Stage. This gave the capability of broadcasting the first steps of the astronauts as they climbed down the ladder of the LM at the start of the first EVA [extra vehicular activity]. The astronauts would then detach the camera from it's mount in the MESA, mount the camera on a tripod, and carry it away from the LM to show the progress of the EVA. This system was the same TV camera used on previous missions inside the CSM, with a few minor modifications to adapt it to the lunar environment. It was called the Field Sequential Camera by Westinghouse.

Soil-repellent fluoropolymers have hydrophobic properties which reduce soiling on textiles and, secondarily, microbial growth. Small molecules such as silver, zinc, copper and quarternary ammonium compounds show antibacterial activity. Silver-coated dressings have been used in wound care... Antibacterial gaents may be added to synthetic fibers in the spinning process, but they can also be fixated to supramolecular compounds on the textile surface. Cyclodextrins are ring-like carbohydrates which form complexes with ’guest’ substances. They can be used as transdermal collector systems in toxicology monitoring, but also to diminish bacterial contamination at sweat-prone sites(so-called odor-controlling textiles) or as antibacterial textiles.

Student Activity : Place a globe of the Earth on a table near the centre of the room. Walk around the room so that you are always facing the globe. How must you turn in order that you always face the globe? How much must the International Space Station turn during each orbit around the Earth so that it always has the same face "looking" down at the Earth? Student Challenge : Looking down on the Earth's North Pole, the International Space Station orbits the Earth in a counter-clockwise direction(this is the same direction as the Earth turns on its axis). Sketch the Earth(looking down on the North Pole) and add the orbit of the International Space Station. Show the ISS at three or four points during the orbit. Assuming the Sun is to the left of your diagram, what happens to the solar panels as the ISS travels around the Earth? If the ISS "tumbles" as it orbits the Earth, can you figure out how to keep the solar panels always facing the Sun?

The amounts of acetaldehyde produced by the yoghurt bacteria are small, in the range of 5 to 10 ppm [parts per million]. Recent studies in our laboratory show a five-to ten-fold increase in acetaldehyde production as a result of extra added threonine... to the growth medium, an almost linear relationship between the level of acetaldehyde produced during milk fermentation and the threonine aldolase activity measured in different Streptococcus thermophilus strains. This clearly shows the importance of this enzyme in flavour formation in yoghurt.

The Global Change Game is a world issues simulation game which teaches about international development, international relations, global environmental issues, and the links between environment, society, and economy. Each participant becomes one hundred million people determining the future of their region of the world through social, economic and environmental decision-making and interactions with other regions. While minutes tick by for the players, years pass in the Game as it travels several decades into the future. Participants are encouraged to show imagination in their quest for global solutions as they learn about the long-term results of their decisions.
