High aspect ratio, or fiber-shaped, nanoparticles(HARNs), represent a growth area in nanotechnology as their useful properties become more apparent. Carbon nanotubes, the best known and studied of the HARNs, are handled on an increasingly large scale, with subsequent potential for human inhalation exposure. Their resemblance to asbestos fibers precipitated fears that they might show the same type of pathology as that caused by asbestos and there is emerging evidence to support this possibility. The large number of other HARNs, including nanorods, nanowires and other nanofibers, require similar toxicological scrutiny. In this article, we describe the unusual hazard associated with fibers, with special reference to asbestos, and address the features of fibers that dictate their pathogenicity as developed in the fiber pathogenicity paradigm. This paradigm is a robust structure-toxicity model that identifies thin, long, biopersistent fibers as the effective dose for fiber-type pathogenic effects. It is likely that HARNs will in general conform to the paradigm and such an understanding of the features that make fibers pathogenic should enable us to design safer HARNs.

CONT

(Nanowerk News) A UK consortium of scientists, led by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh, has published a key report examining whether high aspect ratio nanoparticles (HARN) should raise the same concerns as asbestos fibres. HARN includes materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and metal nanowires. The review, which was published by DEFRA [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] this week, identified many similarities between HARN and asbestos with regard to their physico-chemical properties and toxicological effects, and it concluded that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that HARN, which have the same characteristics (diameter, length and biopersitance) as pathogenic fibres such as asbestos, are likely to have similar pathology.

A headgear usually insulated worn by a skier or a snowboarder that is used to protect the head in case of a fall.

CONT

Several studies have demonstrated that ski and snowboard helmets are effective at preventing head injuries. It is estimated that for every 10 people who wear a helmet, up to five may avoid head injuries. Studies also show that even at a speed of 19 km/h, a ski helmet can minimize brain damage. Evidence also demonstrates that ski and snowboards helmet use did not increase the risk of neck injury.

CONT

Experts recommend that skiers and snowboarders wear a ski helmet in order to reduce the risk of a head injury while skiing. Ski helmets help absorb the shock of an impact to the head, and reduce the jarring of the brain against the skull during impacts with the ski slope or other objects, such as trees or other skiers. The right helmet substantially reduces the risk of concussions and other serious head injuries. ... When choosing a ski or snowboard helmet, look for a helmet that meets ski and snowboard helmet standards from the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), European Committee for Standardization (CEN) or Snell. There should be a label or sticker on the inside of the helmet to designate such a standard.

The concentration of runoff along cow terracettes - the contour-parallel trails made by cattle - is thought to increase gully development ...

The hillslopes in this photograph show evidence of well developed cow terracettes created by cattle moving on preferred paths parallel to the slope contour.

OBS

Sediment-hosted stratiform copper(SSC) or "diagenetic sedimentary" copper deposits belong to a large family of diverse, more or less concordant and discordant copper deposits and occurrences that show a close relationship to their sedimentary host rocks. In this sense they are "sedimentary", even though available evidence supports diagenetic precipitation of metals at redox boundaries rather than syngenetic metal deposition. Nomenclature for deposits of this type is problematic and no general term referring to them is entirely satisfactory.... Because of [their] inferred diagenetic origin, the term "diagenetic sedimentary" copper deposits is a reasonable designation... but... the term "sediment-hosted stratiform" copper deposits is widely accepted for such deposits...

OBS

Analysis of many deposits and districts indicates that most SSC deposits formed during diagenesis in sediments deposited in low-latitude arid and semi-arid areas.

Nuclear products produced by energetic primary and secondary particles show a maximum in their production at a shielding depth of ~0-50 g/cm², whereas nuclear products formed by thermalized neutrons reach a maximum concentration at a shielding depth of ~200 g/cm².

There is one other indicator that the earth is rotating in space. The fact that low pressure regions spin with an anticlockwise motion in the Southern hemisphere, yet in the Northern hemisphere(the high pressure regions) spin with an anticlockwise motion and vice versa raises the question as to what force is being exerted on these winds. Studies of rotating bodies show there is an apparent Coriolis acceleration, which acts sideways on moving objects. Only a Coriolis type acceleration seems to explain the earth's winds and this could only occur if the earth rotates. The fact that the wind direction is always constant is evidence of the earth's consistent rotation.
