DEF

A process by which water bodies show a flat and level water surface in a topographic model.

CONT

Hydro-flattening is the process of creating a lidar [light detection and ranging]-derived DEM [digital elevation model] in which water surfaces appear and behave as they would in traditional topographic DEMs created from photogrammetric digital terrain models (DTMs).

OBS

[A] digital elevation model (DEM) or triangulated irregular network (TIN) derived from LiDAR [light detection and ranging] data will show unpleasant and unnatural water surface due to the fact that LiDAR data does not provide natural breaklines and the elevations of water points is not uniform. Furthermore, hydrologic connectivity in water surfaces is necessary to ensure that the elevation of water surface decreases from upstream (U/S) to downstream (D/S). Therefore, the LiDAR data is hydro-flattened so that water bodies such as streams, rivers, and long reservoirs show an elevation change along their length, whereas ponds, lakes, or other cartographically polygonal water surfaces show a static water surface, consistent with their natural behavior and the surrounding topography ...

CONT

Rhizoctonia canker, caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani, is a fairly common problem on potato production in Kansas. The disease may occur as a surface blemish on the tubers or more seriously as a disease on new sprouts from seed pieces. Affected tubers may be pitted or cracked, but commonly they only show flat irregular lumps or specks(similar to small clumps of soil) on the skin which will not wash off.

Generally, three grades of vanilla are used in food and beverages. The highest grade is called fine vanilla or legitimate vanilla. The pods are thin, eight to 12 inches long, very black in color with a shiny surface coated in givre. Second-best is woody vanilla or bastard vanilla. These pods are five to eight inches long, reddish-brown in color with a dull surface. Vanillon places last among the grades. Vanillon has soft brown pods that are flat and thick. They are frequently partly opne and rarely show any signs of givre.

DEF

Cumulus clouds with little or no vertical development characterized by a generally flat appearance. Their growth is usually limited by a temperature inversion, which is marked by the unusually uniform height of the clouds.

CONT

Fair Weather Cumulus. These clouds have the appearance of floating cotton with a flat base and distinct outlines, while having a lifetime anywhere from 5-40 minutes. The color shading ranges from white to light gray, with bases that can be as low as 1, 000 m above the ground, and have a diameter of about a kilometer or so. The cloud tops, likewise, are usually not very high and designate the limit of the rising air. Called cumulus humilis, these clouds show only slight vertical growth. However, given suitable conditions, what may initially begin as harmless Fair Weather Cumulus, can later develop into towering cumulus clouds that have an appearance resembling that of a cauliflower, with strong updrafts and possibly precipitation.

CONT

... when cumulus clouds have only slight vertical ascent and are usually confined to the lowest 2 kilometers of the atmosphere they are referred to as cumulus humilis; when cumulus clouds reach moderate vertical extent (generally between 2 to 6 kilometers above the ground) an exhibit small protuberances they are termed cumulus mediocris; finally, when cumulus clouds extend high up into the atmosphere (generally 6 kilometers or more above the ground) and their bulging parts resemble cauliflower they are called cumulus congestus.

Cumulus clouds of fair weather are called cumulus humilis.

DEF
