Even in the current environment where lay-offs occur with increasing frequency, resumes which show the candidates has been laid off one or more times should be red flagged. Why? CONT

[In tabulating a frequency-response measurement, inspection] of the attenuator loss indicates that at frequencies above 6000 Hz, the gain of the amplifier must fall off, because less attenuator loss is required to maintain a constant level at the receive meter. At the low frequencies, the attenuator gain must rise... OBS

The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment(ASTEX) was conducted in June 1992 off North Africa, in the area of Azores and Madeira Islands. ASTEX was based on two islands and several ships in an area where the total cloud cover(mostly stratocumulus) ranges from 50-60%. The region is dominated by low-level clouds with moderate optical thicknesses, from about 1 to 10 on average. The optically thinner(more highly broken) clouds generally have cloud tops below the 800 mb level). The optically thicker clouds have lower top pressures down to about 700 mb. The region is characterized by broken low cloudiness and strong gradients of low level cloud amount. Satellite studies show cloud conditions ranging from solid stratocumulus decks to broken trade cumulus. The region is not directly influenced by continental effects, and islands provide suitable sites for surface observations and aircraft operations. ASTEX was thus able to address issues related to the stratocumulus to trade-cumulus transition and cloud-mode selection.

Subject field(s)
  • Practice and Procedural Law
  • Phraseology
OBS

There are few pairs of words more frequently misused, each for the other, than "flaunt" and "flout"... The distinction is really very simple. "Flaunt" means to "show something off proudly or boastfully" :"The drum corps proudly flaunts its colors. ""Flout" means to "show scorn or contempt for a person or thing" :"The speeding driver flouts the law. "

OBS

Confusion of these terms is distressingly common. "Flout" means "to contravene or disregard; to treat with contempt. ""Flaunt" means "to show off or parade(something) in an ostentatious manner, "but is often incorrectly used for "flout", perhaps because it is misunderstood as a telescoped version of "flout" and "taunt".

OBS

The use of "flaunt" to mean "to ignore or treat with disdain" is strongly objected by many usage guides, which insist that only "flout" can properly express this meaning ... many regard the senses of "flaunt" and "flout" as entirely unrelated and concerned speakers and writers still continue to keep them separate.

Historical records of the Southern Oscillation index and of the sea-surface temperature off the Peruvian coast show the two variables are linked, although the association is not perfect. The Southern Oscillation index is calculated by subtracting the atmospheric surface pressure at Darwin, Australia, from the pressure at Easter Island. When the index is positive, the east-west pressure gradient is greater than normal and the trade winds are stronger; conversely, a negative index indicates weak trade winds.
