A transition zone in the atmosphere where an advancing cold air mass sandwiches a warm air mass between another cold air mass pushing the warm air into the upper atmosphere.

The cold front of an intensifying weather system picks up speed and catches up with the warm front. When the cold front reaches the warm front, the warm air is caught and squeezed more and more between the two fronts. It will be lifted and the system becomes occluded, producing what is known as a trowal ("TRough Of Warm Air aLoft").

The boundary between a cold air mass that is advancing and a relatively warmer air mass.

A cold front occurs when a cold air mass moves into an area occupied by a warmer air mass. Moving at an average speed of about 20 mph, the heavier cold air moves in a wedge shape along the ground. Cold fronts bring lower temperatures and can create narrow bands of violent thunderstorms. In North America, cold fronts form on the eastern edges of high pressure systems.

When a cold air mass displaces a warm air mass, the boundary is called a cold front. The advancing cold air is more dense than the retreating warm air, so the cold air forces its way under the warm air, resulting in brief, showery precipitation. After the cold front passes, the air temperature falls.
