A shredder or comminutor cuts solids in the waste water passing through the device to about one-quarter inch size. They are installed directly in a flow channel and are provided with a by-pass so that the section containing the shredder can be isolated and drained for machine maintenance.

OBS

"Comminutor" is usually used to name a specific type of shredding device and is a registered trade name. However it is also often used in a broader sense to mean all types of shredders and thus may be considered a synonym of shredder.

The Barminutor, combination screening and comminuting machine, has a high-speed rotating cutter that travels up and down on the front of the bar screen.

"Comminuting machine" is not truly a terminological unit. Rather it is an expression which explains the function of the machine.

To eliminate the problems associated with the collection, removal, storage and handling of the screenings, devices are installed for the continuous intercepting, shredding and grinding into small pieces of the large floating material in the waste flow. These cutting and shredding devices are called comminutors.

OBS

The term "comminutor" is strictly speaking used to designate only a specific type of shredding device. In a larger sense it is used to designate all types of shredders. A few authors have assigned a third, even larger, sense to the term. They use "comminutor" to mean any type of grinding as well as shredding device. It is this third meaning which is the object of this record. In French, "dilacérateur" refers to cutting and shredding devices only.
