A defect triggered in the root pass of a weld in the immediate neighbourhood of the contact zone, and which spreads radially between the grains when under stress in service. 1, record 1, English, - delayed%20re%2Dheat%20cracking
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
[Delayed re-heat cracking] only occurs with certain materials such as 321 type stainless steel, as it is caused by hardening of the steel due to fine precipitations of titanium carbide inside the crystalline structure. The hardening causes the plastic deformation capacity to be transferred to the periphery of the grains. For this to happen, the following conditions have to be met : a high operating temperature([higher than] 475°C for 321 steel), a geometrical discontinuity at the weld root, strain hardening at the weld root showing significant shrinkage, heavy local load, which may be due to welding stresses, a defect in the weld root(e. g. a small shrinkage crack). 1, record 1, English, - delayed%20re%2Dheat%20cracking

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Control joints can be formed by attaching a strip of wood, plastic, or metal to the form, for vertical surfaces ... or by pressing the strip into the fresh concrete on a slab. 3, record 2, English, - control%20joint
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Use of control joints faced with calking compound has also been recommended to control shrinkage cracking; however, this practice is marked by frequent failures to keep the joints sealed against leakage of rain. Steel joint reinforcement strengthens a concrete masonry wall, whereas control joint weaken it, and the calking in the joints requires considerable maintenance. 4, record 2, English, - control%20joint

Surface cracking due to oxidation and shrinkage stresses, which shows as repetitive mounding of an asphalt surface, resembling the hide of an alligator. 2, record 3, English, - alligatoring
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back. 3, record 3, English, - alligatoring
