SHRINKAGE DEFECT [2 records]

Record 1 2010-12-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Welding and Soldering (Metals)
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
DEF

A defect triggered in the root pass of a weld in the immediate neighbourhood of the contact zone, and which spreads radially between the grains when under stress in service.

OBS

[Delayed re-heat cracking] only occurs with certain materials such as 321 type stainless steel, as it is caused by hardening of the steel due to fine precipitations of titanium carbide inside the crystalline structure. The hardening causes the plastic deformation capacity to be transferred to the periphery of the grains. For this to happen, the following conditions have to be met : a high operating temperature([higher than] 475°C for 321 steel), a geometrical discontinuity at the weld root, strain hardening at the weld root showing significant shrinkage, heavy local load, which may be due to welding stresses, a defect in the weld root(e. g. a small shrinkage crack).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Textile Industries
  • Textiles: Preparation and Processing
DEF

A crimped, rippled, wavy or pebbled place in a fabric showing distortion of the texture.

OBS

This defect is caused during compressive shrinking by over-feeding in which the shrinkage imposed on the fabric is greater than that compatible with the construction, or by poor moisture content control.

OBS

cockling, corrugation, sanforize roughness: Terms and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industries du textile
  • Apprêt et traitements divers (Textiles)
DEF
