SHRINKAGE HEAT [5 records]

Record 1 2016-12-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Textile Industries
  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

A synthetic fibre made from two fibre-forming polymers which may be arranged to lie side-by-side or as a sheath surrounding a core. By suitable heat treatment a crimped fibre is produced because of the different shrinkage properties of the two polymers. Advantage may also be taken of the sheath having a lower softening temperature than the core to produce a non-woven fabric.

CONT

Two different polymers can be extruded side by side in a single fiber coming from the spinneret to create a bicomponent. One of the polymers will have greater heat and/or moisture sensitivity than the other and will spiral during the finishing process thus creating a fiber with greater bulk and comfort.

Key term(s)
  • bicomponent bigeneric fiber
  • bicomponent

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industries du textile
  • Filature (Textiles)
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
DEF

Fibre constituée de deux matières juxtaposées.

OBS

fibre bicomposée : terme normalisé par l'AFNOR.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
  • Inspection for Defects (Materials Engineering)
DEF

Surface cracking due to oxidation and shrinkage stresses, which shows as repetitive mounding of an asphalt surface, resembling the hide of an alligator.

CONT

Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back.

Domaine(s)
  • Toitures (Éléments du bâtiment)
  • Détection des défauts des matériaux
DEF

DEF

The progressive shrinkage of wool... occurs when wool fibers are subjected to heat, moisture, and friction.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industries du textile
  • Apprêt et traitements divers (Textiles)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Textiles: Preparation and Processing
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

Yarn obtained by a process in which two groups of filaments with different shrinkage properties are combined, the crimp being completely or partially developed; in the latter case the development is realized with a subsequent treatment, usually a heat treatment.

OBS

bi-shrinkage yarn: Term and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Apprêt et traitements divers (Textiles)
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
DEF
