SHRINKAGE TEMPERATURE [11 records]

Record 1 2017-01-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cement Industry
  • Types of Concrete
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
OBS

The principal hydraulic cements are :... natural cement, a naturally occurring argillaceous limestone, calcined and pulverized, that is slower-setting and less uniform in quality than portland cement; aluminous, or high-alumina, cement, which consists mainly of calcium aluminates and is quick-strengthening and highly resistant to sulfate attack and high temperature; and expansive cements, which are usually of high sulfate and alumina contents, to produce expansion after hardening or to compensate for the expected drying shrinkage.

OBS

The Dictionary of Earth Sciences (MIEAR) gives "quick hardening cement" as an equivalent to "ciment à prise rapide", but we think that it rather corresponds to the French term "ciment à durcissement rapide".

Key term(s)
  • rapid cement
  • quick-setting mortar

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cimenterie
  • Sortes de béton
  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
DEF

Key term(s)

  • liant à prise rapide
  • mortier à prise rapide

Record 2 2016-12-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Textile Industries
  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

A synthetic fibre made from two fibre-forming polymers which may be arranged to lie side-by-side or as a sheath surrounding a core. By suitable heat treatment a crimped fibre is produced because of the different shrinkage properties of the two polymers. Advantage may also be taken of the sheath having a lower softening temperature than the core to produce a non-woven fabric.

CONT

Two different polymers can be extruded side by side in a single fiber coming from the spinneret to create a bicomponent. One of the polymers will have greater heat and/or moisture sensitivity than the other and will spiral during the finishing process thus creating a fiber with greater bulk and comfort.

Key term(s)
  • bicomponent bigeneric fiber
  • bicomponent

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industries du textile
  • Filature (Textiles)
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
DEF

Fibre constituée de deux matières juxtaposées.

OBS

fibre bicomposée : terme normalisé par l'AFNOR.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wood Sawing
  • Wood Drying
  • Rough Carpentry
  • Finish Carpentry (Wood Industries)
CONT

The high temperature and humidity will help soften the lignin between the wood fibers and thus reduce the stresses caused by shrinkage that in turn produce crook and twist and other forms of warp.

CONT

Lumber cut off-center from the pith (core) of the log will naturally have stress which results in crook or side-bend in many species, especially hardwoods.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Welding and Soldering (Metals)
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
DEF

A defect triggered in the root pass of a weld in the immediate neighbourhood of the contact zone, and which spreads radially between the grains when under stress in service.

OBS

[Delayed re-heat cracking] only occurs with certain materials such as 321 type stainless steel, as it is caused by hardening of the steel due to fine precipitations of titanium carbide inside the crystalline structure. The hardening causes the plastic deformation capacity to be transferred to the periphery of the grains. For this to happen, the following conditions have to be met : a high operating temperature([higher than] 475°C for 321 steel), a geometrical discontinuity at the weld root, strain hardening at the weld root showing significant shrinkage, heavy local load, which may be due to welding stresses, a defect in the weld root(e. g. a small shrinkage crack).
