Record 2 2016-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
  • Forage Crops
DEF

A fungal disease of grass seed, especially tall fescue and perennial ryegrass, that reduces seed germination.

CONT

Blind seed disease, caused by Gloeotinia temulenta, can cause considerable losses in forage grasses managed for seed production.... The fungus infects the developing embryo, which then becomes a partially shrunken, rusty-brown caryopsis(small, dry fruit) rather than a healthy seed. Infected seeds are indistinguishable from healthy seeds, but they can be detected when glumes are removed. The fungus survives in infected seeds in the soil and reproduces above-ground in the developing grass floret. The spores are wind-blown and gain entry to an open floret just below the stigma, completing the primary infection. The fungus destroys the embryo, preventing seed formation and producing the typical "blind seed. "

DEF

Kernels of wheat that are pink in colour because of immaturity, negatively affecting end-use quality.

CONT

Pink kernels are usually shrunken in appearance because of immaturity and display a pink discoloration that seems to be on the interior of the kernel. The pink discoloration has a negative impact on end-use quality.

OBS

Term and abbreviation used at the Canadian Grain Commission.

Record 4 2011-12-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Diseases
  • Beekeeping
CONT

Chalkbrood is easily identified by the hard shrunken chalklike mummies that are produced from infected larvae. It can be white, grey or a combination of white and grey. [It] is a fungal disease that affects all honey bee brood. It is caused by Ascosphaera apis. Honey bee larvae ingest the spores of Ascosphaera apis during feeding.

French

DEF

DEF

[A] dockage that has been removed from a parcel of grain (Canada Grain Act)

CONT

Term used at the Canadian Grain Commission.

OBS

Not to be confused with "dockage".

OBS

The wheat may contain impurities that enter from the field, during storage and transport, or accidentally. These impurities include vegetable, animal and mineral matter and other impurities. These impurities, together with damaged, shrunken and broken kernels, are collectively known as "screenings"("Besatz" on the continent of Europe; "dockage" in the USA).

DEF

Partículas o restos de origen animal, mineral o vegetal.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Crop Protection
  • Grain Growing
OBS

For CWRS [Canada Western Red Spring] and CWAD [Canada Western Amber Durum], there are specific limits for kernels damaged by grasshopper and armyworm, midge and sawfly; grasshoppers and armyworms chew out sections of kernels, particularly the ends and sides; at an early stage, armyworms may chew tunnels through the kernels; this destroys the endosperm, and leaves the exposed chewed areas susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections; heavy discolourations and moulds may result; the orange wheat blossom midge causes a distinct form of damage; grade tolerances for midge have existed for many years based primarily on the shrivelling and distortion of midge-damaged kernels; the tiny midge larvae feed directly on the developing kernels in the heads of wheat; the extent of damage largely depends on the number of larvae feeding on each kernel. Only recently have the full effects of midge damage on Canadian red spring bread wheat quality been studied, revealing the seriousness of midge damage to quality. The shrunken distorted grains reduce flour yields and produce dark flours with increased flour ash. Severely midge-damaged wheat exhibits weak, sticky dough properties, low baking absorption and poor bread quality. Protein content is abnormally high, but gluten protein quality is distinctly inferior.

OBS
