CONT

The offload can be one of the most exciting and rewarding skills in the game of rugby union. The ability to deliver an accurate pass while in contact with the enemy is an art form in itself, and leads to high proportion of line break successes for the attacking side who can it execute well. The idea is that attacking play remains fluid and continuous just as the defence is preparing to stop and reset for another phase. The defenders think that the ball is momentarily "dead" after a tackle has been made and that there will be an opportunity to regroup. The offload shows unexpectedly that this will not be the case, and in that small moment there is a chink of light for the attack.

In general, any player whose assigned position is the left or right instead of the center. But more specifically, refers to players whose job is to come into the attack by bringing the ball up the side line(i. e., the wings) and to send good crossing passes into the center.

Pure "wingers" aren’t used today as much as they used to be. "Wingers" used to be the wide forwards or midfielders (who were sometimes called "withdrawn wingers"). Wing midfielders are sometimes called "winghalfs" or "wingmids" & wing fullbacks are "wingbacks." Today, it is more common to use wingmids or wingbacks to come up to cross the ball than to have wing forwards. "Wingers" who bring the ball up the side are often very fast and excellent dribblers.

Williams is a speedy flank player who will provide service for the forwards.

Defensive player charged with marking the winger.

CONT

A wingback is a member of a football, i. e. soccer team. They play on the left or right wing(that's one or other side of the pitch only), and combine 2 roles. They act as defenders, but also seek to move forward to attack where possible. However, moving forward can create a gap in defence... when the team the wingback is pressing against launches a speedy counter-attack on the break, and gets behind the wingback.
