In an osmotic power plant, we feed freshwater and seawater into two chambers, separated by a membrane. The salt in the seawater then draws the freshwater through the membrane, causing the pressure on the seawater side to increase. This pressure corresponds to a water column of 120 metres, similar to a large waterfall, and can be utilized in a turbine to generate electricity. Osmotic power plants can be constructed anywhere freshwater flows out into the sea, provided that the salt concentration is sufficiently high.

The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. The thick end of the reed is attached, flat side down, to the mouthpiece by a metal ligature or length of twine. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. The vibration carries through the wedged-shaped tone chamber in the mouthpiece and into the air column in the tube.

A cause of non-ideal flows in biochemical reactors. It is caused by excessive pressure drops, irregular packing of the support and the uneven application of the substrate to the column. Thus the fluid tends to find a preferential path through the column, usually down one side when friction of substrate with packing material is greater than that with the walls, or down the centre of the column when friction of substrate with the walls slows fluid flow. Therefore some of the particles in the column do not come into contact with the substrate, and contact with the rest of the particles is variable.

In stirred reactors, better mixing can only be achieved by increasing the stirrer speed, by decreasing the viscosity of the substrate or the concentration of biocatalyst particles, or by baffling the reactor more efficiently. In packed-bed reactors, back-mixing, channelling and temperature gradients within the reactor are the most important causes of deviations from plug-flow behaviour and are expressed as the increase in reactor size needed to achieve the required productivity... Plug-flow is encouraged by the use of evensized, smooth, spherical, evenly packed support particles and by the absence of accumulated solids or gases in the column.

It may be considered that the reaction product is subsequently decomposed by other contaminating enzymes in the column. Thus in the case of immobilized microbial cells, it is necessary to consider side reactions catalyzed by other enzymes existing in the system.

A column drier is equipped with one or more unobstructed columns through which grain falls by gravity. The columns are about 30 centimetres apart and are sheathed on either side by perforated screens or wire mesh which retain the grain but permit passage of air. On one side of each column, space is allowed for air entry and on the other side, air is discharged. Hot air passes across the column at the top of the drier, drying grain as it falls. In a similar manner, cool air passes across the bottom of the column to cool the grain. Some energy conservation has been achieved by recirculating part of the "spent" hot air which has passed through the heating section.

Silica Gel Column Chromatography.... Getting reproducibility when doing silica gel(or alumina) separations with column chromatography can be a problem. If you do not carefully control the water/moisture content of the silica gel and the mobile phase, moisture is added to or removed from the silica gel during the separation. This results in retention times that either increase(with water addition to the silica gel) or decrease(with water loss from the silica gel).... The reseacher attempting to optimize the flash chromatography of new compounds should investigate the effect of moisture on the separation being attempted. Various glass chromatographic columns containing silica gel with different amounts of moisture can be run side by side to see which column produces the optimum results.

The problem of severe baseline drift associated with column bleed at higher temperatures during temperature programming operations was satisfactorily eliminated by Emery and Koerner, who developed a dual-column, programmed-temperature chromatograph, extending the upper usable temperature limits for column packings. This was accomplished by programming the temperature of two symmetrical columns, the effluent of the "dummy" column passing through the reference side of a four-filament, hot-wire thermal conductivity cell compensating for the "bleed" of analytical column.
