Door bottoms. The gap below doors is one of the worst draft areas in many houses. There are several types of weatherstripping for the bottom of a door.

The term "door bottom" is used to designate two concepts. In a broad sense, it is used to describe a type or class of weatherstripping used to seal the gap at the bottom of a door and includes weatherstripping attached to the floor or threshold as well as weatherstripping affixed to the bottom of the door itself(i. e., full threshold weatherstripping, partial threshold weatherstripping, door bottoms and door sweeps). The boxcar has a doorway on each side at the centre of the car; the doorways are approximately 1. 8 metres wide and cover the full height of the box. Before loading, the doorways are covered to the height the grain will be loaded by applying a cardboard or wooden lining(called a grain door) across the door opening and inside the permanent car door. The cardboard or wooden liners are supplied at loading stations by the railways and are applied by elevator company personnel. This procedure is known as coopering.

Iron and Brass work. The over-lapping doors of early buffets and armoires required a special type of hinge called a fische hinge(fiche). The pivot or pins of these hinges were made of cast iron and had wrought-iron tenons wrapped around them while red hot. The tenon of the upper part was fitted into a mortise on the side of the door while the tenon of the lower part was mortised into the side-posts of the furniture.
