An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. Soil retention test. One variation of this test is directed primarily toward the use of geotextiles as underwater silt curtains. The test device consists of two rectangular tanks which are placed end to end with slide gates facing one another. Between these two slide gates is the fabric specimen under test. The upstream tank(with the slide gate closed) is now filled with water that has a known amount of silt uniformly mixed in it. The gate valve at the exit end of the downstream tank is opened. The test begins by lifting up the slide gates on each side of the fabric and allowing the(turbid) water to pass through the fabric, which is acting as a submerged soil filter.... This test... is aimed at the reduction in turbidity of rivers and streams during adjacent construction activities. The other variation of a soil retention test is directed toward the use of geotextiles as aboveground silt fences.

Cable-Reel Shuttle Cars... were introduced in 1939, the year following the first(battery) shuttle car. Practically all present shuttle cars are powered through cable reels. Reels usually hold 500 ft of cable and, therefore, the maximum haul distance should be kept under 400 ft whenever possible. Cable-reel cars are either standard-hand or opposite-standard-hand models. Standard-hand control means that the seats for the operator, together with the controls, are located on the left front or discharge end of the car similar to the operator's position in an American car or truck. An opposite-hand-control car would have the operator sitting on the right-hand side of the car facing forward when traveling to the discharge point. The cable reel always is located on the side opposite the operator.

The growth and extension of sand-shell ridges at salt marsh edges are effects which appear to be common at intervals in the history of many tidal flats. On the open coastline of southwestern Louisiana these ridges, or "cheniers", are known to extend in uninterrupted fashion for 48 km with average widths of 180 m and thicknesses of 2 m(...) The features common to all cheniers, whether large or small, is that they consist of a mixture of sand and shells transported from adjacent intertidal and subtidal areas. On the seaward face during active growth they rest on upper tidal flat sediments, whereas on the landward face they interdigitate with and rest unevenly on salt marsh sediments. The structures are usually asymmetrical with the steeper side facing landward; this is the direction in which they tend to move.
