… hydrodynamic effect means the result of water in motion. On vessels of any size, but especially on large vessels, as the boat moves through the water the friction of the water on the bow and on the hull causes the water to create turbulence. This turbulence, as the force of the water moves toward the stern(back) of the boat, tends to pull floating objects into the side of the boat. 1, record 4, English, - hydrodynamic%20effect

Overflows... have been designed for delicate knitted and woven fabrics made of natural and synthetic fibres. They are also found in the carpet sector. The main difference between jet and overflow machines remains in the fact that in jet machines the fabric is transported by the bath flowing at high speed through the nozzle, while with overflows the fabric is transported by the gravitational force of the liquor overflow. A winch(usually not motor driven) is located in the upper part of the machine and the fabric hangs over it. A longer length of textile hangs from the exit side of the winch than from the inlet side. Gravitational forces pull the longer length of textile downward more strongly than the shorter. The fabric is therefore soaked in the bath without any tension(transportation is very gentle). 1, record 12, English, - overflow%20machine

It can do this because it uses optical technology, direct contact, and a laser, to sense the position of the tip in relation to the sample. The tip is very sharp and protrudes from a small flexible cantilever. The laser reflects off the top side of the tip and is directed to a split photodiode. The height of the surface of the sample deflects the cantilever causing the position of the laser on the photodiode to change. The difference in voltage from the photodiode elements provide a "picture" of the surface. 6, record 14, English, - atomic%20force%20microscope

The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line. 2, record 20, English, - fire%20control%20handle

Up to now, welding two different metals such as steel and aluminum has been a difficult task. Mazda tackles it by optimizing the rotating tool shape and joining characteristics, and by using galvanized steel on one side. A joining gun holds the parts from both sides, and then spins while force is applied. This generates frictional heat that subsequently joins the aluminum materials to the steel sheet metal. Galvanized steel helps prevent the galvanic corrosion that results from the contact of two different types of metal. 1, record 23, English, - joining%20gun

All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 24, English, - Earth%27s%20magnetic%20field

The north westerlies of summer force humid air to rise against the western mountains, causing heavy rain in the west... As the air sinks down on the eastern side of the mountains, it warms and the clouds quite often disperse. This is called the foehn effect and in summer it brings a hot, dry and very trying wind for a while to the Canterbury Plains inland of Christchurch. Then the wind becomes a southerly and for the rest of the year it brings cooler fresher air. 5, record 25, English, - foehn%20effect

Flotation Clarifiers. Dissolved air flotation is a solids-removal process where fine air bubbles become attached to the suspended particles, thus reducing the density of individual particles and causing them to float to the surface. The separated solids then form a floating layer that is a mixture of solids and air bubbles. The buoyant force exerted by the entrapped air also acts to compact the solids into a smaller volume before the floating layer is skimmed off.... A flotation clarifier of recent design is illustrated in Figure 26-7. This unit features a deep, baffled flow shaft for the wastewater. Air is injected on the downcomer side at the bottom of the shaft where a portion is dissolved by hydrostatic pressure. Undissolved air rises against the downward flow, contributing to water saturation. Rising water on the other side of the shaft is thereby saturated with air, but free of undissolved air bubbles. As hydrostatic pressure declines, microscopic bubbles are released from solution and become attached to the suspended solids. 1, record 33, English, - flotation%20clarifier

1, record 33, French, - clarificateur%20par%20flottation

When the hand lever is squeezed the cable retracts within its sheath, pulling the right caliper toward the rim and exerting an equal and opposite force on the cable sheath which, pressing downward, forces the left caliper toward the wheel rim, in such a way as to press rubber blocks against the rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction. 4, record 34, English, - sidepull%20brake
