Gaskets for Glazing. Structural gaskets, made of preformed and cured elastomeric materials, may be used instead of sash for some applications to hold glass in places. Gaskets are extruded in a single strip, molded into the shape of the window perimeter and installed against the glass and window frames. A continuous locking strip of harder elastomer is then forced into one side of the gasket as a final sealing component. Fit and compression of the gasket determine weathertightness. With proper installation, calking is not ordinarily required; but should it be necessary, sealants are available that are compatible with the material of which the gasket is made. Eppley Precision Spectral Pyranometer, PSP. This instrument is considered to be the most accurate radiometer produced commercially for the measurement of global sun and sky radiation, totally or in defined wavelength bands. It can be inverted to measure reflected shortwave radiation(from which the albedo can be calculated). The PSP has a circular multi-junction thermopile of the plated(copper-constantan) wire wound type which is temperature compensated in order to get a response that is independent of ambient temperature. The temperature sensed by the detector is nearly linear with the flux density of incident radiation. The instrument is supplied with a pair of removable precision ground and polished concentric hemispheres of Schott optical glass. The inner hemisphere is transparent to a wavelength of 0. 285-2. 800 µm. The outer dome can be replaced by Schott glass hemispherical filters which transmit within specified bandwidths. Desiccant is placed in the side of the instrument to absorb humidity inside the glass domes. Measurements are reported in Wm-2.

The ESA facility MOMO MOrphological transition in transparent MOdel materials is designed to study directional solidification of optically transparent melts. It investigates the effect of gravity on the formation of growth morphologies.

The key element of the MOMO experiment assembly is a Bridgman furnace for low temperatures(< 100°C). The furnace generates a temperature gradient over a cylindrical glass ampoule containing the sample. The sample material for the first two flights was a succinonitrile(SCN) based compound, which has solidifying structures similar to those of a metal alloy. The furnace is accommodated on a linear drive, which can be moved over the sample ampoule for directional solidification. An endoscope from the liquid side of the sample provides optical observation of the solid-liquid interface. Recorded images are analysed after the experiment to determine parameters of the solidifying morphological structure.

Silica Gel Column Chromatography.... Getting reproducibility when doing silica gel(or alumina) separations with column chromatography can be a problem. If you do not carefully control the water/moisture content of the silica gel and the mobile phase, moisture is added to or removed from the silica gel during the separation. This results in retention times that either increase(with water addition to the silica gel) or decrease(with water loss from the silica gel).... The reseacher attempting to optimize the flash chromatography of new compounds should investigate the effect of moisture on the separation being attempted. Various glass chromatographic columns containing silica gel with different amounts of moisture can be run side by side to see which column produces the optimum results.

Types of fire-resistant glasses.... They can be classified into two categories : heat-transmitting glass and heat-insulating glass. The basic difference is that heat-transmitting glass will contain flames and inflammable gas for a short period of time, but does not prevent the transmission of heat to the other side of the glazing while fire-insulating glass will not only contain flames and inflammable gas for a longer period of time but will also prevent the transmission of flames, heat and smoke to the other side of the glazing.

We have an electronic sight glass that I use if the receiver dryer does not have a sight glass. It seems to be fairly accurate. You clamp in on the high pressure line shortly after the condenser. If you are determined to get a sight glass it is cheaper to put an inline one in after the receiver dryer or find a dryer with a sight glass in it already.

Methods of Closure Thread-engagement types(...) Press-Twist. The "press-twist" is another closure which attains its threads on the capping line. Primarily used for baby foods it also provides closure for sauces, gravies and juices.
