Freshly harvested "green" wild rice is invariably on the damp side. It must commence drying, or "curing, "almost immediately, or souring and mold will develop, especially in broken or crushed grains. Another purpose of the curing period is to give the immature grains a chance to ripen. Given this opportunity, a good number of the soft grains will get hard and gain the dark brown or black color of a ripe grain.

Conveyor belts inside the galleries transfer grain from scales to shipping spouts. A column drier is equipped with one or more unobstructed columns through which grain falls by gravity. The columns are about 30 centimetres apart and are sheathed on either side by perforated screens or wire mesh which retain the grain but permit passage of air. On one side of each column, space is allowed for air entry and on the other side, air is discharged. Hot air passes across the column at the top of the drier, drying grain as it falls. In a similar manner, cool air passes across the bottom of the column to cool the grain. Some energy conservation has been achieved by recirculating part of the "spent" hot air which has passed through the heating section.

The tendency of crossbanded products to warp, as the result of uneven shrinking and swelling caused by moisture changes, is largely eliminated by balanced construction. Balanced construction involves plies arranged in similar pairs, a ply on each side of the core. Similar plies have the same thickness, kind of wood with particular reference to shrinkage and density, moisture content at the time of gluing, and grain direction.

Such storages usually have a flat floor with a tunnel reclaim conveyor system, similar to large flat-bottomed tanks. The boxcar has a doorway on each side at the centre of the car; the doorways are approximately 1. 8 metres wide and cover the full height of the box. Before loading, the doorways are covered to the height the grain will be loaded by applying a cardboard or wooden lining(called a grain door) across the door opening and inside the permanent car door. The term "wet blue" or "blue side" refers to the processing of hides or skins through to the chrome tanned state only. The chrome tanned leather can then be shipped to different tanneries for coloring, fatliquoring and finishing. A wet bleu operation can be located near the source of hides to give the advantage of the elimination of cure. Wet bleu stock can be sold on a more accurate specification of the grain characteristics. With the increased problem of pollution control of tanneries located in urban areas, the purchasing of wet blue becomes not only desirable, but in some cases is a necessity.

With the change to SI units a special hardened steel tool(known as the Janka hardness tool) rounded to a diameter of 11. 3 mm(projected area 100 mm2) is embedded to one-half of its diameter into the(20mm) test piece... an electrical contact... rings a signal bell when the correct depth of penetration has been reached... the hardness test is performed... on the static bending specimen.... The rate of penetration of the ball is 0. 11 mm/s... there is a very good correlation between the side hardness of timber, as determined by the Janka hardness tool, and its compression strength perpendicular to the grain.

The term "wet blue" or "blue side" refers to the processing of hides or skins through to the chrome tanned state only. The chrome tanned leather can then be shipped to different tanneries for coloring, fatliquoring and finishing. A wet bleu operation can be located near the source of hides to give the advantage of the elimination of cure. Wet blue stock can be sold on a more accurate specification of the grain characteristics. With the increased problem of pollution control of tanneries located in urban areas, the purchasing of wet blue becomes not only desirable, but in some cases is a necessity
