The offload can be one of the most exciting and rewarding skills in the game of rugby union. The ability to deliver an accurate pass while in contact with the enemy is an art form in itself, and leads to high proportion of line break successes for the attacking side who can it execute well. The idea is that attacking play remains fluid and continuous just as the defence is preparing to stop and reset for another phase. The defenders think that the ball is momentarily "dead" after a tackle has been made and that there will be an opportunity to regroup. The offload shows unexpectedly that this will not be the case, and in that small moment there is a chink of light for the attack.

SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size.

lancer (nom) : Mise en mouvement d'une pierre en lui donnant, par l'élan adéquat, l'impulsion, la pesanteur et l'effet nécessaires pour qu'elle se positionne sur le jeu, ou déplace ou sorte du jeu d'autres pierres qui y sont déjà immobilisées.

Toute pierre qui ne franchit pas complètement la ligne de jeu du côté de la cible est considérée hors jeu et retirée de la piste à moins qu'elle n'ait frappé une autre pierre auparavant.

OBS

Lorsqu'il y a insuffisance de force dans un lancer, on dit du lancer qu'il est «mou», et de la pierre, qu'elle est «légère». Ces deux adjectifs, peu utilisés comme nom au lieu de «lancer mou» ou «pierre légère», signifient «avec moins de pesanteur, force ou puissance que désiré ou nécessaire pour atteindre la cible».

OBS

Distinguer le «lancer mou» exécuté avec insuffisamment de pesanteur et qui n'atteint pas la cible, du «lancer léger» intentionnellement effectué avec retenue pour atteindre une cible souvent juste derrière la ligne de jeu.
