In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 1, English, - after%20capstan

The offload can be one of the most exciting and rewarding skills in the game of rugby union. The ability to deliver an accurate pass while in contact with the enemy is an art form in itself, and leads to high proportion of line break successes for the attacking side who can it execute well. The idea is that attacking play remains fluid and continuous just as the defence is preparing to stop and reset for another phase. The defenders think that the ball is momentarily "dead" after a tackle has been made and that there will be an opportunity to regroup. The offload shows unexpectedly that this will not be the case, and in that small moment there is a chink of light for the attack. 2, record 2, English, - offload

There are three different types of foam proportioners commonly used in the fire service :line eductors, balanced pressure proportioners, and around-the-pump proportioners. The line eductor is the simplest and least expensive proportioning device. It has no moving parts in the water way, which makes it durable and dependable. The line eductor may be attached to the hoseline or may be part of the nozzle. There are two different types of line eductors : the in-line eductor and the self-educting nozzle. Both types of eductors use the venturi principle to draft foam concentrate into the water stream. As water at high pressure passes over a reduced opening, it creates a low-pressure area near the outlet side of the eductor. This low-pressure area creates a suction effect. The eductor pickup tube is connected to the eductor at this low-pressure point. The pickup tube submerged in the foam concentrate draws concentrate into the water stream, creating a foam water solution. 6, record 36, English, - in%2Dline%20foam%20concentrate%20inducer

Today, it is more common to use wingmids or wingbacks to come up to cross the ball than to have wing forwards. SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 56, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 56, French, - SIAM

Slice serve. Side spin and topsin are applied to the serve, causing the ball to keep low and change direction after bouncing. 5, record 79, French, - cochon

Rounders is an English game. It is often played as a casual game with a stick and a ball, but it has a proper set of rules. It is played 9-a-side, and each side has two innings. The batsmen use a wooden bat called a stick and try to score rounders. The bowler bowls with a smooth underarm action from a distance of 24 1/2 feet(7. 5 m). The four bases are posts 3 ft. 11 in.(1. 2 m) high. The batsman tries to hit the ball and then run around the outside of the posts to the fourth post in order to score a rounder. To score, you have to reach the fourth post on your own hit. If you stop at a post, you may run home when a teammate hits the ball, but you do not score. You join the end of the batting line. You can be out if the ball is caught, or if a fielder touches you or the post with the ball. When all the batsmen are out, the innings are over. 3, record 87, English, - rounders
