Cribbing is essential in many extrication operations. Its most common use is to stabilize objects. Wood selected for cribbing should be solid, straight and free of major flaws such as large knots or splits. Cribbing surfaces should be free of any paint or finish because this can make the wood slippery, especially when it is wet. Cribbing can be made out of pieces of timber found in the debris and cut to size.... Cribbing involves multiple pieces of wood laid on the side and crossed. It spreads the load well and has many load transfer surfaces. It also has lateral stability depending on the ratio of width to height. The height should not be more than three times the width.

Using a sulky makes it possible to increase the hauling distance up to about 500 metres. This axle, equipped with two automobile wheels, is designed to support the ends of the trunks which usually drag on the ground. It consists of an axle about 1. 5 m(5 ft) wide whose rounded surface makes it easier for the trunks to slide. A removable stake is installed on each side of the sulky, to contain the load. A tube welded perpendicular to the front of the axle, with a chain on the end, is used to attach the load firmly.

The unique results achieved with supercalendering are due to the intermediate fibrous rolls(sometimes referred to as bowls or filled rolls) which possess elastic or plastic properties. With the application of load on the nips, the metal rolls cause a depression or deformation on the fibrous rolls at the point of contact, and the deformation spreads out on either side of the nip(Figure 18-28). When rotated, this spread area will creep because of the constant effort of the material to return to its normal shape. This flow causes a relative motion of the filled roll surface against the metal roll surface, thus producing rolling friction, which helps to give the polishing and smoothing effects. The intensity of action is governed by the amount of plastic flow and by the nip contact pressure.
