A cutter-loader designed for continuous mining taking a medium web of 2 ft 6 in.

It consists of a cutter section with horizontal and vertical jibs and gummer to which is attached a loading chute or plough which turns the cut coal on to the conveyor alongside. To reverse the direction of cutting, the vertical shearing jibs are swung round from one side of the horizontal jibs to the other, and reversal of the horizontal cutter chain is by means of the reversible motor-the chains being provided with double-pointed picks. The minimum height at which the machine can cut is 2 ft 8 in.

The storm coming from the east has produced reverse loading in alpine areas. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

When a slope is loaded by the wind, there is a very general pattern to it, which results from the typical "weather pattern. "For example-the prevailing storm pattern in western Canada is from the southwest and this will deposit snow on the northeast side of the mountains(generally). When the weather pattern reverses and we get an "upslope" storm, the weather comes from the east and we will see a "reverse loading" pattern. So, basically it means a windloading pattern that is opposite to the prevailing pattern. [Reference : Grant Statham, Avalanche Specialist, Parks Canada. ]

The company recently worked with the Alberta Research Council to design and develop a rotary drum composter, equipment that completely isolates waste material in a container and accelerates the composting process.

A rotating barrel composter can be made from a large drum with aeration holes punched in it, and fins inside to lift and mix the compost materials. A hinged loading door in the side allows wastes to be added gradually. Some are rolled on the ground to mix the contents; others are mounted horizontally on stands with crank attachments.

Johansson's ro/ro vessels differ markedly in design from the now-traditional Paralla design. Rather than use a large quarter ramp, the owner prefers twin axial ramps, each slewable, one to port and the other to starboard. Normally, the twin stern ramps are used simultaneously in the straight aft position for maximum speed of loading. However, should it not be possible to work cargo stern to, then each ramp will slew 35° off the centre line enabling the ship to still load and unload when berthed either side to a marginal quay.

Detachable caissons containing the cargo are locked into bays in the side of a mother ship which carries only fuel and ballast. When the ship arrives at her destination port, the ballast is adjusted so that she rises. The caissons, on which she actually rides, can be detached and towed into berths for unloading or loading. Subsequently the caissons are re-positioned in the bays at the side of the ship, which adjusts her ballast to re-engage on the caissons.

The boxcar has a doorway on each side at the centre of the car; the doorways are approximately 1. 8 metres wide and cover the full height of the box. Before loading, the doorways are covered to the height the grain will be loaded by applying a cardboard or wooden lining(called a grain door) across the door opening and inside the permanent car door. The cardboard or wooden liners are supplied at loading stations by the railways and are applied by elevator company personnel. This procedure is known as coopering.
