The objective of a green corridor is always to link important natural areas in a city using a strip or corridor characterised by rich vegetation. ... The benefits of green corridors are various, of course: increased biodiversity, promotion of non-polluting mobility, reduced air/noise pollution, helping prevent heat islands, and better water retention. They also generate social, cultural and economic benefits. 2, record 1, English, - green%20corridor

Green corridors slicing through an urban area are conspicuous. Such strips(1) subdivide the area,(2) block out the other side,(3) are filters for movement across,(4) are thin and dominated by edge species,(5) are likely to be seen or encountered,(6) may be appealing or dangerous, and(7) tend to channel movement along their length. Indeed, these characteristics lead to the five major ecological functions of corridors... : conduit; barrier/filter; source; sink; and habitat. 3, record 1, English, - green%20corridor

Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Once a ruck has formed you can only play the ball with your feet—playing the ball with your hands in a ruck is a penalty—and the offside rules are very strict. You have to join the ruck from behind—if you join from the side, that's a penalty. Rucking players try to push their opponents backwards and move the ball backwards with their feet, making it available for their teammates. Once it's out the back of the ruck, it can be picked up. The rules of the ruck favour the tackled player's team, but if the tackling team successfully push their opponents back and move the ball to their side with their feet, it's their ball. This is called a counter-ruck. 3, record 4, English, - counter%20ruck

The Dix-Hallpike test is typically performed in a doctor's office. The doctor will ask you to sit upright on an exam table with your legs stretched out in front of you and your head turned to one side. They will then ask you to lower your head and torso back so that you end up lying with your head stretched off the edge of the exam table, turned with one ear down at a 45-degree angle. If there are misplaced calcium deposits(also called canaliths) in the posterior canal of your inner ear, this will trigger vertigo symptoms. 4, record 6, English, - Dix%2DHallpike%20manoeuver

In an osmotic power plant, we feed freshwater and seawater into two chambers, separated by a membrane. The salt in the seawater then draws the freshwater through the membrane, causing the pressure on the seawater side to increase. This pressure corresponds to a water column of 120 metres, similar to a large waterfall, and can be utilized in a turbine to generate electricity. Osmotic power plants can be constructed anywhere freshwater flows out into the sea, provided that the salt concentration is sufficiently high. 3, record 9, English, - osmotic%20power%20plant

Complete Fabric Retaining Walls. A fabric retaining wall consists of horizontal layers of fabric-containing earth fill with one side of the fabric folded back around the exposed edge and lapped over the next layer to form the wall face.... At the face of the wall the fabric retains the soil from spilling out, while in the interior of the fill fabric tensile stress is developed, which stabilizes the mass. 1, record 26, English, - complete%20fabric%20retaining%20wall

Fabric Earth dams. While this application is similar in concept and construction method to fabric retaining walls, the hydrostatic pressure of the retained water and the potential scour problem make the application somewhat unique. Kern describes an application of this type in France where a fabric wall with a vertical downstream face was constructed ... the upstream slope is 2:1. Canadian Origin Stories-The Birth of Good and Evil. The story of Sky Woman's descent to earth continues with the birth of Sky Woman's daughter. Sky Woman's daughter gives birth to twin sons. Even prior to their birth, these two sons are in conflict. The good twin is born in the natural way, while his evil brother, jealous of his sibling's being born first, pushes himself out his mother's side. The birth of the twins marks the beginning of the battle of good and evil on earth. The brothers grow quickly and begin to fill the world with their creations. One creates all that is good and useful to humans, while the other is destructive, and creates all that is bad. Eventually the good twin defeats his evil brother, and banishes him to a pit under the earth. From this pit the evil twin sends emissaries that continue to bring evil into the world. What is snowskating?... it's skateboarding on snow. That's just the most basic explanation out there, but of course there a some more variables.... There is the technical side of snowskating that resembles the street style way of skateboarding with its flips and ollies. At the other end of the spectrum there is the surf-like snowskating style like longboards on snow, where you find your way through deep pow in a flow way of riding. The first snowboard was called the Snurfer which was invented around 1964. It consisted of some sort of small surfboard and a rope in front of the board to hold on too. There were no bindings present, so you could say the first snowboard was actually a snowskate. 2, record 32, English, - snowskating

The inside of the hole is filled with plastic directly from the sprue and acts as a gate. It must be machined out later. A ring gate accomplishes the same thing from the outside. 4, record 35, English, - ring%20gate

Record number: 43, Textual support number: 1 OBS

The XB-25E was a standard production modified for anti-icing research. The carburetor air intake duct was faired internally into the top of the cowling and an anti-icing air intake was mounted at the bottom. Each row of cylinders exhausted through a separate exchanger, one ported outboard and one inboard of each nacelle. Ram air from the lower cowling duct was routed underneath the engine to a split duct, each side of which was directed to one of the heat exchangers. Air admitted to these heat exchangers was directed through a series of gates that allowed diversion of heated air either to the anti-icing system or out the exhaust. A complex system of ducting led the hot air to the outer wing leading edges and also into the fuselage and to the leading edges of the tail. It was intended that the temperature of the hot air would be sufficiently high that ice on the wing leading edges surfaces would be vaporized rather than melted, which would have prevented water from flowing aft and then freezing again on flaps and ailerons. 1, record 60, English, - anti%2Dicing%20air%20intake

Parallel track search. This procedure is normally used when :(a) the search area is large and fairly level;(b) only the approximate location of the target is known; and(c) a uniform coverage is desired. The aircraft proceeds to a corner of the search area and, flying at the allotted height, sweeps the area maintaining parallel tracks, the first of which is at a distance equal to the sweep width from the side of the rectangular area. Successive tracks are flown parallel to each other but at twice the sweep width apart. This type of search may be carried out by one aircraft or by several aircraft flying parallel tracks or each searching smaller rectangular areas separately. 1, record 64, English, - parallel%20track%20search

1, record 64, French, - ratissage%20par%20passes%20parall%C3%A8les

The landing gear of the BE-10 aircraft is a fully retractable tricycle configuration, driven by a 28-volt motor located on the forward side of the main spar. The main gear actuators are driven from the motor gearbox through torque shafts. The nose-gear actuator is driven by a duplex chain from a sprocket on the motor gearbox. The input shaft to the nose-gear actuator drives a series of rotating gears inside the actuator. These gears rotate a screw into and out of a lubricated aluminum-bronze alloy nut. An in-ground swimming pool may seem like a solid, unmovable structure, but it is actually sort of like a boat--it can float in the surrounding ground water. When the pool is empty, the ground water pressure can actually push the structure up out of the ground. This is one of the reasons why pools are filled with water year-round--there needs to be roughly equal pressure on each side of the pool. 1, record 73, English, - in%2Dground%20swimming%20pool

Wind speed is the measurement of the wind blowing toward your observation station. It is measured using a wind instrument such as an anemometer or visual observation using the Beaufort scale. All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 89, English, - Earth%27s%20magnetic%20field

Register forms are merely continuous strip forms which are contained inside a box made especially for use with the forms. The forms are accordion folded into "packs" and these packs are put in the register box with the first form to be written upon threaded up and over a metal plate which serves as a writing base or platform.(...) After the form is written upon, it is ejected from a slot in the top end of the box and the next form is automatically pulled into position for the next writing. The movement of the form up and out of the box may be done manually with a crank on the side of the register or with a finger lever on the top of the box or it may be done electrically. One of the principal features of the register is that after the form has been written upon, one copy is automatically guided into a container built into the bottom of the register. 1, record 97, English, - register

Skate Tips : Catamaran. Talk about a blast from the past, catamaraning can be a lot of fun, and it's real easy to do. All you need is a partner. What you do is you sit on your board sideways facing your partner, while your partner does the same. Position the boards so that you can both put your feet comfortably on the ends of each other's boards. Once in position, you start down a fairly mellow hill. You turn by having the person on the turning side lean back, like he's on the trapeze of a catamaran. The person on the nonturning [side] leans in to help out with the turn. 1, record 99, English, - catamaran

There are two skateboarders set parallel to each other a couple of feet apart. Each one is equipped with a toochas pad for comfort and two handles for steering. The riders sit on the boards with their bodies facing each other, their legs resting on the other person’s deck, and both looking in the direction of travel. Turning is accomplished by one person leaning back and pulling on their handles, at the same time the other person leans forward and pushes on theirs.
