Once a ruck has formed you can only play the ball with your feet—playing the ball with your hands in a ruck is a penalty—and the offside rules are very strict. You have to join the ruck from behind—if you join from the side, that's a penalty. Rucking players try to push their opponents backwards and move the ball backwards with their feet, making it available for their teammates. Once it's out the back of the ruck, it can be picked up. The rules of the ruck favour the tackled player's team, but if the tackling team successfully push their opponents back and move the ball to their side with their feet, it's their ball. This is called a counter-ruck. 3, record 1, English, - counter%20ruck

The offload can be one of the most exciting and rewarding skills in the game of rugby union. The ability to deliver an accurate pass while in contact with the enemy is an art form in itself, and leads to high proportion of line break successes for the attacking side who can it execute well. The idea is that attacking play remains fluid and continuous just as the defence is preparing to stop and reset for another phase. The defenders think that the ball is momentarily "dead" after a tackle has been made and that there will be an opportunity to regroup. The offload shows unexpectedly that this will not be the case, and in that small moment there is a chink of light for the attack. 2, record 2, English, - offload

poaching: a strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net extends the range of his reach by cutting in front of his or her partner in order to attempt a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. 3, record 13, English, - poach
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 2 OBS
There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 3, record 13, English, - poach

You can advance the cause of your pairing by improving the ability to use the player nearer the net [net guard] to intervene, or fake to do so, in the exchanges. The interception of the return of serve or a mid-rally shot will demonstrate your resolve to dominate that court position ... Even if your success rate is not all it could be, the threat you pose may be sufficient to earn other points, and to feint the interception when you have no intention of following through can induce a weak response which can be put away by your team-mate ... The poaching shot is usually down the sidelines, wide of the opposing net guard. 2, record 13, English, - poach

1, record 18, French, - deuxi%C3%A8me%20neuf

A strategy in doubles play in which the player closest to the net on the serving team cuts in front of his or her partner in order to play a volley on the return of serve intended for his partner waiting near the baseline. Used as a surprise tactic or to shield a weaker partner from pressure. 2, record 44, English, - poaching
Record number: 44, Textual support number: 1 OBS
There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one's partner's side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In more general French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. In English, the term "poaching" denotes a strategy as well as a set of specific actions used in doubles play; the term "poach" is the result of these actions. The French term "braconnage" denotes the action, while the term "interception" denotes the result. Related terms : crisscrossing, switching, to intervene. 2, record 44, English, - poaching

Handicapping in tennis... Known players are allotted a handicap annually that mirrors their competitive results.... Points are awarded as either received or owed odds in each group of six games of a set, according to your standard of play. Players cannot be given a handicap greater than owe 50, or more than receive 40... For the purpose of matching the handicaps of different handicap players, handicaps are also graded above and below scratch(the handicap of 0), where. 1 owed or received equals a handicap of 1/6 of 15 owed or received.... When both players are handicapped to receive points or both to owe points, they play on the difference of their respective handicaps. In the case of received odds the player with the less odds goes back to scratch(love) and in owed odds he goes forward to scratch.... when players meet with handicaps on either side of scratch, two points owed are equal to one received.... 1, record 46, English, - scratch

A method of play whereby ruffing tricks are made in each of a partnership's hands, thus using the trumps separately. When a crossruff is played, ruffing tricks are being taken in two side suits. It is usually a good idea to cash winners in the remaining suit at an early stage.(The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge, 1971, p. 83). 1, record 49, English, - crossruff

1, record 51, French, - cale%20d%27%C3%A9paisseur
