CONT

Padel(pronounced pa-delle) is a racquet sport that was invented in Mexico and enjoys huge popularity in Europe and Latin America.... Padel combines all the best elements of tennis, squash and badminton in an enclosed space that is slightly smaller than a regular tennis court. Usually, padel is played in doubles team format and the scoring is the same as tennis. The balls can bounce off the back and side walls allowing for unexpected bounces and exciting rallies.

CONT

CONT

The backhand is usually performed from the baseline or as an approach shot. For a right-handed player, a backhand begins with the racquet on the left side of the body, continues across the body as contact is made with the ball and ends on the right side of the body, with the racquet over the right shoulder.

DEF

Act of spinning the tennis racquet in the air or on the ground in order to determine whether the manufacturer's insignia, found in the butt of the handle, faces upwards or downwards or to determine whether a special string on the racquet is rough or smooth. If the player offered the choice of choosing wins the "toss",(s) he is given the opportunity to make the choice to serve first, select the side in which(s) he will receive serve or the right to have his or her opponent choose.

OBS

Related phraseology: toss of the coin.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

DEF

A popular and versatile way of holding the racket, characterized by the wrist lying directly over the top of the grip and the palm facing down and the index finger and thumb forming a V around the left side of the racket handle.

OBS

Continental Grip. Also known as the "hammer" grip, because you hold the racquet as if you are going to hammer a nail with the side of the frame, the Continental is the one grip that can be used for every shot. But its primary uses are for serves, volleys, overheads, slices, and defensive shots.

OBS

Used as a compromise between the eastern forehand and eastern backhand grips by some players to eliminate the necessity of shifting their hand on the racket. Sometimes the term "service grip" is erroneously used as a synonym because it is the grip most commonly used in serving; however this is a misnomer since today there are many different types of service grips in use.

PHR

Modified continental grip.

DEF

PHR

Continental modificada.

Record 5 2011-12-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

Type of return-of-serve groundstroke shot made with a short backswing and in which the lower back side of the ball is blocked back with a slightly open racquet face, thereby imparting both underspin and sidespin to the ball, forcing it to dip and fall into the midcourt. The opponent is thereby forced to generate his own pace to return the ball safely over the net. The ideal shot to used against a serve-and-volleyer; also the motion required to execute such a shot.

OBS

A variation of the "chop", a "chip shot" is usually shallow, forcing an opponent to move quickly forward to hit up on a low ball right into the waiting hands of the attacker. Some tennis players consider the terms "dink" and "chip" to be synonymous. However, semantically speaking, "dink" is more generic in that it may refer to any shallow shot hit with or without much spin. Moreover, "dink" usually implies a certain degree of ruse and deception in conjunction with the use of appropriate body language, whereas "chip" implies no deception.

CONT

If you wish, the chip can be lobbed - as a surprise tactic - but remember that without topspin it will be easier to chase and reach.

PHR

Crosscourt, short, soft chip.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sports de raquette
DEF
