Squirrels mainly travel between the tree crowns. Wherever trees are too far apart, as is the case around roads, they venture onto the ground. As six roads cross through the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark, squirrels would end up as road kill victims. To put an end to this situation, six squirrel bridges were created in 2012. In places where several squirrels had been run over, rope bridges were created to give squirrels safe passage between the tree crowns on either side of the lane.

Adaptive headlights are an active safety feature designed to make driving at night or in low-light conditions safer by increasing visibility around curves and over hills. When driving around a bend in the road, standard headlights continue to shine straight ahead, illuminating the side of the road and leaving the road ahead of you in the dark. Adaptive headlights, on the other hand, turn their beams according to your steering input so that the vehicle's actual path is lit up.

Chicane is created when traffic is forced to deviate around fixed objects in an otherwise-straight road. The road is, in effect, narrowed first from one side, then the other, and finally from the first side again, in relatively short succession. Chicanes break up the typically long sightlines along streets and thus combine physical and psychological techniques to reduce speeds. Chicanes can be created by alternating parking from one side of a street to the other.

What sets DCD design apart from the conventional diamond interchange is that it combines left-turning traffic with through traffic. This is accomplished by directing left-turning and through vehicles to the opposite side of the road at ramp terminals. One of the most scenic trails on Little St. Simons Island also offers a unique chronology of the Island's cultural history. Old House Road follows the western side of the maritime forest and is approximately 2 miles long. The trail passes through our largest prehistoric archaeological site, a vast area of oyster shell middens that date from 700 to 1650 A. D. With a part-time/full-time system, users expect to employ four-wheel drive on the highway. But accepted practice held that a planetary or bevel gear differential was needed to prevent generation of wind-up torques on a dry road. Designs without mechanical differentials have long been known to cause particular problems during tight turns and parallel parking, when wheels on one side of the vehicle travel a different distance than wheels on the other side. Forcing all four wheels to operate in synchronization during such maneuvers causes drive-line wind-up.

Slope stakes are set on lines perpendicular to the centerline(one on each side), at the points where the cut and fill slopes intersect the natural ground surface. The sloping of the slope stakes outward allows the eqpt to work to the stake without removing it, indicates the direction of the centerline of the road, and enables the eqpt operators to read the stakes more easily. Slope stakes are placed at 30 M intervals on tangents and at 20 M intervals on horizontal or vertical curves. Wherever a sharp break in the original ground profile occurs, it should also be staked.
