A reed or blade of other material that serves as the sounding apparatus of certain wind instruments.

CONT

The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. The thick end of the reed is attached, flat side down, to the mouthpiece by a metal ligature or length of twine. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. The vibration carries through the wedged-shaped tone chamber in the mouthpiece and into the air column in the tube.

A turn in which the inclinometer is centered.

The turn and slip indicator... The instrument is usually calibrated to indicate a rate one turn when the turn needle is centred on one of the indexes seen either side of the centre index. In a straight and level flight, the ball and needle are both centred. In a correctly banked turn, the needle indicates the rate of the turn. The forces acting on the ball cause it to remain centred.

La glissade est une manœuvre qui se fait en utilisant le manche et le palonnier en contre ou en opposition. En virage coordonné, vous mettez le manche du côté du virage pour obtenir l'inclinaison tout en mettant le palonnier dans le même sens pour conserver la bille au centre. En glissade le palonnier est mis en sens contraire. La bille part du côté du virage, le vent ne vient plus de face mais de côté car l'avion glisse en crabe vers l'inclinaison.

Lorsque l'avion effectue un virage à droite ou à gauche, le rotor «précesse» autour de son axe de rotation et fait rouler le cardan. À son tour, le mouvement rotatoire du cardan fait bouger l'aiguille sur le devant de l'instrument. Un ressort renvoie le gyroscope au neutre lorsque l'avion cesse de virer. L'indicateur de virage indique le «taux» de virage et non «l'amplitude». Le taux standard, ou virage au taux 1, est égal à 3 degrés par seconde ou 360 degrés en deux minutes.

To get on a button lift, you carry your ski poles in one hand and take hold of the bar with the other. Then you just slip the "button" between your legs. Do not sit on it. To get off, you bend your knees slightly, pulling yourself forward, and move the button out and away. You then move off to one side.

Parmi les tire-fesses, on compte : 1. l'arbalète, téléski à archets ou «remonte-pente en T» qui tracte deux skieurs, chacun des côtés de la barre (ou archet double) les tirant sous les fesses; 2. le téléski à perches ou «remonte-pente en J» dont l'extrémité en forme de J tracte un skieur sous les fesses; 3. le téléski à soucoupes ou «remonte-pente à soucoupe(s)» que le skieur glisse entre ses deux jambes. Dans tous les cas, le skieur se laisse tracter, sans s'y asseoir. À l'origine, les génériques «téléski» et «remonte-pente» désignaient le type de remontée que l'on appelle maintenant «tire-fesses»; ce terme également devenu générique, il y a lieu d'utiliser les termes précis pour rendre les spécifiques correspondant à «T-bar», «J-bar» et «poma lift» ou «button lift».

Ce type de téléski a déja été considéré comme «débrayable»; ce dernier adjectif désigne maintenant le système qui permet à une télécabine ou un télésiège de ralentir sa course à l'embarquement et au débarquement sur un câble d'appoint au débit ralenti. Dans le cas du poma, la perche ne débraie pas mais se détache du câble de traction pour s'aligner sur une suspension d'évitement; elle se réenclenche au câble tracteur sous l'effet du poids du skieur.

The "slab method" forms pottery from flat pieces of clay. The potter shapes the clay into flat slabs by pounding it with the fist or by flattening it with a rolling pin. Using one slab as the base, the potter places other slabs at right angles to it to form the side of a piece of pottery. The slabs are then attached together with slip.

The slab method involves building handmade pots from rolled-out pieces of clay ... from which may shapes can be formed. To keep an even thickness, roll the clay on a board with a small strip of wood nailed on each side, so that your rolling pin will ledge on them.
