A permanent thermocline exists beneath the stream sloping upward from the right to the left side of the current. This thermocline separates the warm water of the Gulf Stream from the cold slope water and the boundary is often referred to as the cold wall or north wall. A ski bowl is an open expanse of an area that appears like a bowl-shaped depression off the side of a mountain. The wind is a very important modifier of snow conditions. Areas with deposition of drifted snow should be assessed very carefully: the downwind sides of ridges, hills, and ribs, and local depressions on a steep slope, "caps" of gullies, and notches. Bowls, cirques, and wide depressions have complex wind action patterns that increase the uncertainty when predicting snow stability. 3, record 6, English, - bowl

When a slope is loaded by the wind, there is a very general pattern to it, which results from the typical "weather pattern. "For example-the prevailing storm pattern in western Canada is from the southwest and this will deposit snow on the northeast side of the mountains(generally). When the weather pattern reverses and we get an "upslope" storm, the weather comes from the east and we will see a "reverse loading" pattern. So, basically it means a windloading pattern that is opposite to the prevailing pattern. [Reference : Grant Statham, Avalanche Specialist, Parks Canada. ] 2, record 18, English, - reverse%20loading

Steep gullies, filled with ice and snow, are a frequent source of avalanches because they combine several hazardous features :. Often slope angles exceed 40° so that slab and loose snow avalanches are frequent.. Several independent starting zones can occur on the sides and at different elevations.. The snow condition/stability can vary widely over the length of the gully, making evaluation difficult.. Snow deposition and characteristics are radically affected by the weather in a gully..... The difficulty of escaping to the side and the probability of hitting rocks magnify the danger for persons caught. 2, record 19, English, - gully

Landfill methods. There are three principal landfill methods of landfilling...(1) Excavated cell method...(2) Area method...(3) Embankment method : An embankment method is used in situations where the site topography allows for the landfill to be ramped on a hill side or a steep side slope. This type of landfill has commonly been used in past years for design of landfills in ravines, coulees, or gullies with soil being obtained from the hill side or side slopes. 1, record 29, English, - embankment%20method
Record number: 29, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Two general methods of landfilling have evolved : the area method and the trench method. Some schools of thought also include a third, the slope, or ramp, method. In some operations, a slope or ramp is used in combination with the area or trench methods.... In the ramp or slope method(a variation of the area and trench landfills) the solid wastes are dumped on the side of an existing slope. After spreading the material in thin layers on the slope, the bulldozing equipment compacts it. The cover material, usually obtained just ahead of the working face, is spread on the ramp and compacted. 4, record 29, English, - embankment%20method
