... the TSB [Transportation Safety Board of Canada] analyzed specifically the aircraft steering system, while not ignoring the other factors mentioned above, although no indication was found that they could have contributed to the occurrence. To steer the aircraft on the ground, the pilot in the left seat uses the nose-gear steering wheel on the console to the pilot's left. During take-off and landing, directional control of the aircraft is maintained solely by the rudder. The aircraft's ground steering system comprises several components, including the nose-gear steering wheel, a system of cables and pulleys, and a steering control valve fitted to a nose-wheel steering cylinder, which is attached to the nose-wheel strut. The cable and pulley system links the steering wheel to the control valve. When the pilot turns the steering wheel to the left or right, tension is applied to the cables connected to the pulley on the steering control valve. This action determines the direction and the deflection rate of the nose wheel by allowing hydraulic fluid to enter one side or the other side of the nose-wheel steering cylinder; the steering cylinder then deflects the nose wheel through a system of gears. 3, record 13, English, - aircraft%20steering%20system

4, record 13, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20d%27orientation

Could you please describe what is meant by hoe "ditch requirement"?... Typically, ditch excavation across the Prairies, of course, is undertaken by a wheel ditcher, a large bucket wheel trencher that excavates the material on to a conveyor belt and moves it off to the side of the trench line. A hoe ditch is a backhoe--you know, a Cat 235, 245, that type of equipment--that you have to utilize to excavate a trench where you have a fairly severe bend, because these bucket wheel ditchers can only go in a straight line, essentially. 4, record 14, English, - wheel%20trencher

According to Bengt Beckman the worlds first cryptomachine was swedish... The machine, called in 18th century swedish :"Chiffre-Machinen", consisted of 57 wheels mounted on a common shaft. These wheels were housed in an oblong cylinder. On half of the circumference of each wheel, the normal ordered alphabet was engraved, and on the other half numbers between 0 and 99 were likewise engraved, but in mixed order, with each of the 57 wheels having their own mixed sequence. On one side, along the length of the cylinder, was a slot wide enough to allow one letterposition of all the 57 wheels to be seen, and on the opposite side a similar slot allowed a row of 57 figures to show themselves. 2, record 28, English, - ciphering%20machine

Mechanical corn shellers that were turned by hand or powered by horses were available in the mid 1800's. There were two main types of shellers : the picker-wheel sheller and the cylinder or cage-type sheller. In the picker-wheel sheller the cob was shelled as it was rubbed between a rough surfaced rotating iron disk and a guide wheel which wedged the cob close to the disk until it was shelled. The shelled corn was thrown out the side of the sheller and the shelled corn dropped through the bottom of the sheller into a container. 1, record 32, English, - picker%2Dwheel%20sheller

One of three kinds of rim or caliper brakes whose action originates from the side of the wheel(usually the left side), using one pivot point for two caliper arms. They are activated by means of a sheathed brake cable connected at one end to the brake lever mounted on the handlebar and at the other end to one of the caliper arms. When the hand lever is squeezed the cable retracts within its sheath, pulling the right caliper toward the rim and exerting an equal and opposite force on the cable sheath which, pressing downward, forces the left caliper toward the wheel rim, in such a way as to press rubber blocks against the rim simultaneously, stopping the bicycle through pressure and friction. 4, record 33, English, - sidepull%20brake

Welded cans are manufactured by one of two methods, wheel or wire welding. Both are variations of a forge-welding process.... Wire welding can accommodate the use of tin plate while wheel welding is best suited for tin-free steel, TFS. When using TFS, both methods require grinders to clean the edges to be welded so that they are free of oxides and chrome surface materials. Prior to side seam welding, the body blanks are formed into cylinders and tack-welded to maintain shape and proper relationship of the edges to each other.... Welded seams are used extensively for three-piece beverage, aerosol and food cans. 1, record 35, English, - wire%20welding

swift : Another name for a reel. It is a lightweight, collapsible device upon which silk or rayon skeins are spread to be unwound. The swift is an ideal device upon which to place silk or rayon, in different manageable forms, for future use. The swift may be compared with a wheel without the usual rim. The two spokes, one on each side of the hub, of which there are six to eight sets, have a piece of string that joins them at the tips.
