  • Skydiving, Paragliding and Hang Gliding
DEF

Cords or webbing of silk, nylon, cotton, rayon, or other textile materials which connect the drap surface of the parachute [and paraglider] to the harness.

CONT

A paraglider is made up of the wing, rigging(lines), small carabiner, and risers.... Lines. Commonly known as lines(a set of rigging) measuring variously between 0. 4-1. 7 mm, even 2. 2 mm, their high level of strength or weight resistance depends on their thickness and the properties of material used in its construction. They are usually concerned with a protective sheath to guard against ground friction and are made from dyneema, kevlar, spectra, superaramid and so on. The lines attach the wing to risers which in turn are attached to the pilots harness, and extend from the wings downward side in the order specified by the particular manufacturer, gradually tapering off in thickness and number via a series of quick links. Finally they end up in tiny linkages(known as small carabiner) from the risers.

CONT

The paraglider wing(or "canopy") is a self-inflating structure consisting of a row of cells, most of them open at the front and all of them closed at the back, joined together side by side. Moving through the air keeps them inflated because air goes in the front but can’t get out the back.

OBS

Although the term "paraglider" generally refers to the entire aircraft assembly, paraglider pilots often used the term "paraglider" in specific contexts as a synonym of "wing" and "canopy," in which case it refers to the self-inflating structure made of non-porous fabric and not to the entire assembly.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Parachutisme, parapente et deltaplane
CONT

In general, any player whose assigned position is the left or right instead of the center. But more specifically, refers to players whose job is to come into the attack by bringing the ball up the side line (i.e., the wings) and to send good crossing passes into the center.

CONT

Pure "wingers" aren’t used today as much as they used to be. "Wingers" used to be the wide forwards or midfielders(who were sometimes called "withdrawn wingers"). Wing midfielders are sometimes called "winghalfs" or "wingmids" & wing fullbacks are "wingbacks. "Today, it is more common to use wingmids or wingbacks to come up to cross the ball than to have wing forwards. "Wingers" who bring the ball up the side are often very fast and excellent dribblers.

The XB-25E was a standard production modified for anti-icing research. The carburetor air intake duct was faired internally into the top of the cowling and an anti-icing air intake was mounted at the bottom. Each row of cylinders exhausted through a separate exchanger, one ported outboard and one inboard of each nacelle. Ram air from the lower cowling duct was routed underneath the engine to a split duct, each side of which was directed to one of the heat exchangers. Air admitted to these heat exchangers was directed through a series of gates that allowed diversion of heated air either to the anti-icing system or out the exhaust. A complex system of ducting led the hot air to the outer wing leading edges and also into the fuselage and to the leading edges of the tail. It was intended that the temperature of the hot air would be sufficiently high that ice on the wing leading edges surfaces would be vaporized rather than melted, which would have prevented water from flowing aft and then freezing again on flaps and ailerons.

The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line.

Differential adjustment : An aircraft has its wing defined as a wing-like body with a tangential flow rotor in the leading edge. A shroud, under the lower part of the tangential flow rotor, terminates in at least one movable flap defining a lift-generating lip when the rotor is rotating such that the upper part of the rotor, projecting above the level of the upper surface of the wing-like body, is moving rearwardly. A typical multi-head breaker is a rubber-tired, self-propelled unit which carries 1, 000 to 1, 500 pound hammers mounted laterally in pairs. Half of the hammers are in a forward row and the remainder diagonally offset in a rear row so that there is continuous breakage from side to side. Each pair of hammers is attached to a hydraulic lift cylinder which operates as an independent unit. Each unit can develop between 1, 000 and 8, 000 foot pounds of energy depending upon drop height selected. The units can cycle at a rate of 30 to 35 impacts per minute. The typical machine is eight foot wide and carries twelve hammers eight inches in width. An extension wing, carrying two 1, 500 pound hammers, can be added to each side for a total breaking width of up to 13 feet. Pavement breaking can be as narrow as 2. 67 feet or increased in increments up to 13 feet. Typical production rates per machine are 6000-8000 square yards per day.
