SIGNAL/NOISE RATIO [15 records]

Record 1 2023-05-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Audio Technology
  • Sonar and Underwater Detection (Military)
  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

The upper water layer of the ocean contains air bubbles, induced by wind and waves. These air bubbles attenuate the sound transmission and reception from a hull-mounted transducer... The thickness of the bubble layer may be 5-10 m, or more, depending on the sea state. A towed transducer operates below this bubble layer. The transducer is closer to the fish. This gives a better signal to noise ratio, and also the resolution of single fish is improved because the width of the sound beam is smaller. For the study of deep water biological resources[, ] below 500 m[, ] a towed transducer is essential.

DEF

A measurement signal [that] consists of a sequence of pseudo-random numbers [or pulses] that are sent as audio to [an] output.

CONT

MLS is an abbreviation for Maximum Length Sequence. ... Nowadays Maximum Length Sequence measurements are quite standard in many different application fields. One of them is acoustics. ... The MLS method can also be used to analyze and obtain information about the impedance or the absorption coefficient of a surface.

CONT

The existing wind speed instrument... measures wind speed and direction simultaneously with good accuracy.... Other possible methods to collect wind data simultaneously are for example hotwire anemometer instruments or MLS(maximum length sequence).... In brief, the travel time of a sound pulse is used to determine the wind speed. The MLS method can give the wind component along the sound propagation path with sufficient accuracy and can also increase the signal to noise ratio.

CONT

DEF

In analog and digital communications, signal-to-noise ratio, often written S/N or SNR, is a measure of signal strength relative to background noise[;] the ratio is usually measured in decibels(dB).

OBS

This ratio is usually in terms of peak values in the case of impulse noise and in terms of the root-mean-square values in the case of random noise.

OBS

This ratio may be a function of bandwidth of the transmission system.

OBS

Theoretical studies have shown the potential scientific value of multi-spacecraft radio tomographic imaging of the magnetosphere. The <10 RE WIND perigee passes during August 2000 afforded a unique opportunity to test and verify the capabilities of radio tomography by measuring interspacecraft electromagnetic wave propagation parameters using the Radio Plasma Imager(RPI) on IMAGE as the transmitter and the WAVES instrument on WIND as the receiver.... We show how changes in the path-integrated electron density/magnetic field product can be unambiguously measured from this continuous, low signal to noise ratio, single frequency measurement.

In practice, it is sensible to work with a spectrometer resolution which is high enough to avoid markedly non-linear calibration curves. This, of course, will increase the required spectrometer scan time, for a given signal/noise ratio in the spectrum, and a compromise may be necessary. The problem will not arise to a marked degree in the case of measurements on liquid samples, although peaks from some types of vibrational modes, e. g. the out of plane deformation modes of the hydrogen atoms attached to aromatic rings, give sharp and analytically useful peaks which are narrow enough to give these non-linear calibration curves.
