Train drivers on most European lines are informed of approaching warnings and cautions through the use of an AWS(automatic warning system). As the train reaches a certain point on the track a non-contact inductor sends a signal which is detected in the driver's cab. An audible or visual alarm then activates to alert the driver who then needs to acknowledge the signal otherwise the brakes are applied.

Door contacts. Magnetic door contact switches can be concealed or surface mounted.... These are electromechanical sensors that are composed of two electrical contacts.... Active motion detectors fill the volume in range of the detector with either ultrasonic, microwave, or sonic energy. The transmitted energy forms a standing wave pattern as it reflects from the objects and walls in the room. Some of this energy is reflected back to the detector receiver, where it is received and processed.
