CONT

Acoustic reflex decay measures the ability of the stapedius muscle to maintain sustained contraction. During this test, a signal is presented 10 dB [decibels] above the acoustic reflex threshold for 10 s [seconds]. A response is considered abnormal if the response amplitude decreases to one half or less of its original amplitude within 5 s. Because reflex decay is common in many normal ears at higher test frequencies, frequencies of 500 Hz [hertz] and 1000 Hz are most often used in acoustic reflex decay tests.

CVGs [Coriolis vibrating gyroscope] have three features in common : a mechanical resonator, an oscillator and a force-displacement sensor. One mode of the resonator is maintained in resonance by an oscillator loop while oscillations are induced in a second vibration mode. The amplitude of the oscillations gives a signal proportional to the input angular rate. A wide variety of resonators, actuation and sensing schemes are possible. The simplest resonator is a tuning fork.

CONT

... the following characteristics can be those of a rate gyro designed to measure a rate of turn up to 100 DEG per second. The mechanical resonator comprises four beams each having a cross-section of 6 mm by 6 mm, and each 30-35 mm long. The piezo-electric elements are constituted by pellets of PZT having a thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter, metal-coated on both faces, and bonded to the beams.

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration.

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels.

The horizontal and vertical sync pulses that form part of the composite video signal are separated in the sync separator. The composite video signal is either taken from the video detector output or after one stage of video amplification. A sync separator is a clipper that is suitably biased to produce output, only during sync pulse amplitude of the video signal. In some receivers, a noise gate precedes the sync separator. This suppresses strong noise pulses if present in the video signal.

It was these days when the suppressor grid modulation became very popular utilizing the advantage of pentode for getting an amplitude modulation when the signal of voice frequencies is superposed to the suppressor grid. On the other hand, in those applications where suppressor grid modulation was not required, the presence of the suppressor grid made the structure of the transmitting tube more complex and also increased the inter-electrode capacities.

[The] operation of an active device which is biased almost to output-current cut-off so that current flows only during one half of each cycle of sinusoidal input signal, i.e. the angle of flow is 180°.

OBS

[The class-B] mode of operation... is very efficient because the mean current of the active device is directly proportional to the signal amplitude and is almost zero for zero input signal. The output signal is... a reproduction of only one half of each cycle of input signal but linear amplification is possible by using two class-B stages in push-pull operation and most of the output stages in transistor amplifiers and receivers are of this type.

OBS

The theoretical efficiency of a class-B stage (measured by the ratio of the output power to the power taken from the supply) is 78% and efficiencies approaching this value can be obtained in practice.

High-power modulation. In an AM transmitter amplitude modulation of the carrier by introducing the modulating signal into the anode circuit of the final amplifying stage. The power of the modulating signal thus approximates to that at the transmitter output.

CONT

Modulation is also identified as to level. High level modulation occurs when the modulating voltage is applied to the collector/plate circuit of the final power amplifier. With high level modulation, the final stage is operated class C and the preceding stages are also operated class C. The overall efficiency of such a transmitter is very high. A disadvantage of high level modulation is that comparatively high audio power is needed and several stages of voltage and power amplification may be required in the speech amplifier and modulator circuits.

Constant-current modulation [is] a system of amplitude modulation in which the output circuits of the signal amplifier and carrier-wave generator or amplifier are directly and conductively coupled by a common inductor. The inductor has an ideally infinite impedance to the signal frequencies and therefore maintains the common plate-supply current of the two devices constant. The signal-frequency voltage thus appearing across the common inductor also modulates the plate supply to the carrier generator or amplifier, with corresponding modulation of the carrier output.

[The] operation of an active device in which the bias and signal amplitude are so chosen that output current flows throughout each cycle of input signal(assumed sinusoidal), i. e. the angle of flow is 360°.

CONT

Class-A operation. Class-A amplifier operation is characterized by a conduction period of the output current (collector or drain) of 360°. That is, the operating point is chosen to have a constant voltage and current. In effect, the amplifier power is on all the time. This is referred to as linear operation. By operating in the linear region of the transistor’s characteristics, the amplified signal suffers minimum distortion. This comes at a price of inefficiency in the amplifier. The theoretical maximum possible efficiency of a class-A amplifier is 50%, but due to linearity requirements of the applications, the efficiency may be no more that 25%.

The step-function response of the syllabic filter is related to the syllabic rate of speech, is independent of the sampling rate, and is exponential in nature. When the overload algorithm output is true, a charging curve is applicable. When this output is false, a discharging curve is applicable.

CONT

Integrated Cantilever Beam Tunneling Sensor. Our researchers have exploited the extremely sensitive quantum tunneling effect between metals to design MEMS sensors that can sense a force applied to a silicon-based, surface micromachined structure with extraordinary sensitivity and six orders of magnitude of dynamic range. The force is applied to a micromachined cantilever (one electrode) and is sensed as a result of a tunneling current produced between the cantilever and a tunneling tip (the other electrode). The sensor is operated in a force rebalance mode such that the cantilever and tip do not actually move with respect to each other but are held in a servo-locked state with the voltage required to maintain the servo-lock proportional to the force being sensed by the cantilever.

OBS

Several different types of sensor devices have been designed, fabricated and demonstrated using this concept. These include extremely high dynamic range accelerometers, and high performance microgyroscopes that show the prospect of enabling very compact, inexpensive, precision inertial navigation and inertial measurement systems.

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.

The Positron Microscope was designed and built to be a hybrid instrument capable of performing several types of positrons and electron microscopy. For both electrons and positrons the microscope can be run in one of two modes : magnifying mode in which particles leaving the target are focussed onto a CEMA plate assembly to form a magnified image and scanning mode in which the amplitude of a signal is recorded as a function of the position(and possibly energy) of the incident beam. As an electron microscope the instrument will be able to operate in both magnifying and scanning(SEM) modes. As a positron microscope, however, source considerations will limit its immediate use to magnifying mode, i. e. positron reemission microscopy.
