DEF

... a solid state system in which all the antenna elements are connected to a single transmitter/receiver and [that] uses phase shifter modules to selectively delay certain parts of the signal, while allowing others to transmit without delay.

CONT

One radar that has gained popularity due to its ability to scan a large field of view is the phased array radar(PAR). [One] traditional PAR [is] known as a passive electronically scanned array(PESA). In the PESA, a single transmitter generates a high-powered signal that is transmitted through individual antenna elements. Each transmit element has an associated computer-controlled phase shifter... that creates a directional beam by adding a phase shift to the signal from each element. The narrow beam is sequentially steered through the field of view by changing the phase at each element.

[A] depth finder puts out a constant amount of power. It does not matter where... the gain level [is] set. Gain simply controls how much... the signal that is bounced off of the bottom [is amplified]. Therefore, a narrow beam transducer will appear to be much more powerful than a wide beam transducer. This is because [the] same amount of power [is applied] into a smaller area. This can be an advantage [for] fishing in deep water... A narrow beam transducer can be overpowering in shallow water.

CONT

The upper water layer of the ocean contains air bubbles, induced by wind and waves. These air bubbles attenuate the sound transmission and reception from a hull-mounted transducer... The thickness of the bubble layer may be 5-10 m, or more, depending on the sea state. A towed transducer operates below this bubble layer. The transducer is closer to the fish. This gives a better signal to noise ratio, and also the resolution of single fish is improved because the width of the sound beam is smaller. For the study of deep water biological resources[, ] below 500 m[, ] a towed transducer is essential.

... the industry standard for fish detection are split-beam echosounders. In ideal survey conditions, their echograms provide a clear image of fish as they travel through the beam of ensonified water. For high-energy tidal channels, the conventional processing approach is to limit the depth range by excluding the surface as it is difficult to distinguish bubbles from fish in areas of entrained air... When fish form dense aggregations, it can be difficult to acoustically identify an individual fish from its neighbour when the signal is over-saturated.

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution.

Fine Beam. The fine beam mode is intended for applications which require the best spatial resolution available from the RADARSAT system. The azimuth resolution is 8. 4 m, with range resolution 9. 1 m to 7. 8 m from F1 to F5. Since the radar operates with a higher sampling rate in this mode than in any of the other beam modes, the ground swath coverage has to be reduced to a nominal 50 km in order to keep the downlink signal within its allocated bandwidth. Originally, five fine beam positions, F1 to F5, were available to cover the far range of the swath, the incidence angle range from 37 to 47 degrees. The creation of narrow satellite beams permits not only the effective use of satellite power, but also allows the reuse of the frequency band and provides a means of overcoming the self-interference limit in CDMA.... Today's mobile satellites have onboard processors which connect an uplink band to a downlink beam. Processors use A/D conversion and digital filtering. The A/D converters quantize the signal and produce quantisation noise. The combined signal to quantization noise ratio is(N/C) q=(L2-1)/p2pa.

Both radio broadcasting and fiber optic systems require three essential elements : a transmitter, a transmission medium and a receiver. Instead of a radio wave transmitter and modulator to set the broadcast frequency and power the signal through the air, optical systems use modulators to establish an optical frequency, or channel, on a laser beam and feed it through a fiber. An optical frequency receiver then collects the messages, much in the manner of a radio set. And, just as tunable radio receivers let listeners select from among a number of stations, a tunable receiver for fiber optic communication is highly desirable.

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses.
