When deciding the length to be provided, consideration should be given to providing an area long enough to contain overruns and undershoots resulting from a reasonably probable continuation of adverse operational factors on a precision approach runway, the ILS localizer is normally the first upstanding obstacle and the runway end safety area should extend up to this facility.

When the track bar is used in conjunction with a VOR [VHF omnidirectional radio range], a lean out of 10° to one or the other side from the signal causes a full deflection of the indicator. If the same pointer is used as an indicator of the ILS localizer, a full deflection will be induced by a 2, 5° diversion from the center of the localizer's beam.

The localizer establishes a radiation pattern in space that provides a deviation signal in the aircraft when the aircraft is displaced laterally from the vertical plane containing the runway center line... This deviation signal drives the left-right needle of the pilot's cross-pointer(or flight director) and may be wired to the autopilot/flight-control system for "coupled" approaches.

As an integral part of worldwide search and rescue, NOAA [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] operates the Search & Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking(SARSAT) System to locate those in distress almost anywhere in the world at anytime and in most conditions. The SARSAT system uses NOAA satellites in low-earth and geostationary orbits to detect and locate aviators, mariners, and land-based users in distress. The satellites relay distress signals from emergency beacons to a network of ground stations and ultimately to the U. S. Mission Control Center(USMCC) in Suitland, Maryland. The USMCC processes the distress signal and alerts the appropriate search and rescue authorities to who is in distress and, more importantly, where they are located.

The three gyros, all aligned with the spacecraft roll axis, which is normally pointed toward the sun, measure incremental changes in roll attitude (orientation about the axis in space where the spacecraft rolls).

A gravity feedback which causes a stabilized platform to act in the same way as a pendulum with its mass at the earth’s centre.

Most inertial platforms are mechanized... in a "local vertical" mode, which means that the perpendicular to the stable element(inner gimbal) always points toward the center of the Earth. To accomplish this, the integrated outputs of the north and east accelerometers(vehicle velocity) are divided by the radius of the Earth and used as an additional signal to drive the gimbal torquers. This is known as a Schuler loop.

The video-on-demand model takes advantage of some form of two-way communication between the home and the video source, which could be a low-bandwidth back channel on a CATV path or a phone line with sufficient bandwidth to carry a compressed video signal. The home may be furnished with a low-cost box, which accepts signals from a hand-held control and which transmits the appropriate status to the video control center. The viewer uses the hand-held control to navigate a selection menu and choose a program. Shortly after the selection is made, the program begins playing. During the course of the movie the viewer is able to pause, reposition, and use other VCR-like controls.
