SIGNAL COURSE [21 records]

Record 1 2019-10-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
CONT

The localizer signal emitted from the transmitter site at the far end of the runway is confined within an angular width between 3° and 6°. The localizer provides course guidance throughout the descent path to the runway threshold from a distance of 18 NM [nautical miles] from the antenna between a height of 1000 ft above the highest terrain along the approach path and 4500 ft above the elevation of the antenna site.

CONT

In a similar manner as the LOC signal, the GS [glide slope] sends a UHF [ultra high frequency] carrier signal with the same two 90-Hz and 150-Hz sideband frequencies that aircraft instruments determine as above or below the desired glide path. This is approximately 3 degrees to the horizon which gives the aircraft a descent rate of approximately 500 feet per minute.

OBS

The acquisition time course is often over several minutes for DCE [dynamic contrast enhancement], while DSC [dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast] is about 60 seconds in length. This time allows for measurement of the wash-in and wash-out of the contrast material in the EES [extracellular extravascular space]. There are several methods for image interpretation. The simplest method is to examine the signal intensity curves over time for a region of interest. The rate or slope of the wash-in and wash-out curve for multiple regions of interest can be visually assessed.

Gyroscopes can be used as devices for direction finding, guidance, and control. If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. After a few oscillations, damped out by friction, the axis of spin of the gyroscope settles down along a vertical direction. Inertial guidance systems make use of very similar phenomena. Once a gyroscope has been set spinning about a chosen axis, any motion that would cause it to deviate from this direction calls into existence a torque that can be used as an error signal to control corrective maneuvers... Some of the most important applications of gyroscopic phenomena are in aircraft instruments. A free(perfectly balanced) gyroscope can give a constant indication of a chosen reference direction for checking the correct course, and a gravitationally loaded gyroscope can be used to identify the true vertical at all times and so define an artificial horizon against which the pilot can measure the angles of bank and climb.

In practice, it is sensible to work with a spectrometer resolution which is high enough to avoid markedly non-linear calibration curves. This, of course, will increase the required spectrometer scan time, for a given signal/noise ratio in the spectrum, and a compromise may be necessary. The problem will not arise to a marked degree in the case of measurements on liquid samples, although peaks from some types of vibrational modes, e. g. the out of plane deformation modes of the hydrogen atoms attached to aromatic rings, give sharp and analytically useful peaks which are narrow enough to give these non-linear calibration curves.
