Adaptive cruise control is similar to conventional cruise control in that it maintains the vehicle's pre-set speed. However, unlike conventional cruise control, this new system can automatically adjust speed in order to maintain a proper distance between vehicles in the same lane. This is achieved through a radar headway sensor, digital signal processor and longitudinal controller. If the lead vehicle slows down, or if another object is detected, the system sends a signal to the engine or braking system to decelerate. Then, when the road is clear, the system will re-accelerate the vehicle back to the set speed. 7, record 14, English, - adaptive%20cruise%20control

In this regime, carriers(electrons and holes) excited by absorbed photons are strongly accelerated in the strong internal electric field, so that they can generate secondary carriers, as it also occurs in photomultipliers. The avalanche process, which may take place over a distance of only a few micrometers, for example, effectively amplifies the photocurrent by a significant factor. Therefore, avalanche photodiodes can be used for very sensitive detectors, which need less electronic signal amplification and are thus less susceptible to electronic noise. 3, record 18, English, - avalanche%20photodiode

Free-Space Optics (also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air (free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units. 1, record 22, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics
Record number: 22, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions. 7, record 22, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics

The train stopped just inside Block 3 is protected by Signal A125, but only if the second train stops at the signal correctly. Should it run past the signal, it will get "tripped" by the trainstop of A125. However, there is insufficient room for the train to stop before it collides with the first train. The safe braking distance is too short. To overcome this situation, each signal is moved back a safe braking distance from the entrance to the block. This distance is called the overlap... The overlap now provides a safe braking distance for any train which overruns a signal so that there is no risk of it colliding with a stopped train in front. 2, record 24, English, - overlap

Theoretical Maximum Range... is the maximum [range] between two [avalanche] transceivers.... The maximum range can be established by using two transceivers of the same type with new batteries. Find a large flat area such as a football field and place one device on the ground in transmit mode. The other should be set to search mode on maximum gain and the antennas should be parallel. Move away from the device on the ground until the signal disappears. Admiral Fitzroy’s (English) storm signal [1864] consists of a hollow cylinder and cone, either of which, or both simultaneously, may be suspended from a mast or staff so as to be visible to ships in port or in a roadstead. Their positions and grouping denote the probable direction of the wind in an approaching storm. Thus: cone point upward to the right of the staff = northerly gale; cone point downward to the left of the staff = southerly gale; cylinder above = expect dangerous winds from both quarters successively; upright cone above cylinder = Dangerous wind expected from the north; reversed cone below cylinder = dangerous wind expected from the south; and so on. 2, record 31, English, - gale%20cone

Satellite navigation.... which has been developed over the last thirty years or so, essentially for military purposes originally, enables anyone with a receiver capable of picking up signals emitted by a constellation of satellites to instantly determine their position in time and space very accurately. The operating principle is simple : the satellites in the constellation are fitted with an atomic clock measuring time very accurately. The satellites emit personalised signals indicating the precise time the signal leaves the satellite. The ground receiver, incorporated for example into a mobile phone, has in its memory the precise details of the orbits of all the satellites in the constellation. By reading the incoming signal, it can thus recognise the particular satellite, determine the time taken by the signal to arrive and calculate the distance from the satellite. Once the ground receiver receives the signals from at least four satellites simultaneously, it can calculate the exact position. 2, record 33, English, - satellite%20navigation

1, record 36, French, - satellite%20Artemis

In a long synthetic aperture (array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground. 2, record 40, English, - SAR%20focusing
Record number: 40, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight(range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited. 2, record 40, English, - SAR%20focusing
