The single-axis inertial platform... The angular motions of the controlled member are sensed by the single-axis gyro. The output signal of the gyro is electronically processed and fed to the torque motor(TM) of the stable element and to the torque generator(TG) of the gyro. The problem is to determine how to do the electronic processing so that the controlled member maintains its orientation in spite of disturbances. The voltage across the output signal generator(SG) of the gyroscope is proportional to the integral of the angular velocity of the controlled member about the gyroscope's input axis. Consequently, this signal is fed to an amplifier and then to a motor, which drives the controlled member in the proper direction to null the ouptut of the gyroscope.

[The] push-broom scanner [is a] type of imaging system... commonly used in optical remote sensing satellites such as SPOT. The imaging system has a linear detector array(usually of the CCD type) consisting of a number of detector elements(6000 elements in SPOT HRV). Each detector element projects an "instantaneous field of view(IFOV) "on the ground. The signal recorded by a detector element is proportional to the total radiation collected within its IFOV. In a long synthetic aperture (array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground.

The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight(range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited.
