A portable transceiver carried by people in avalanche-proned areas and used to help locate the carrier in case he is buried in an avalanche.

Transceivers work in two modes: transmit and search. In transmit a signal is emitted by a transceiver and this can be detected by another transceiver set in search mode. Basic models emit a series of beeps, the frequency and volume can be used to localise a buried victim.

There are two basic transceiver types, analogue and digital.... Digital devices give a range and direction, analogue devices provide an audio indication of distance and direction and may also feature a flashing lamp showing signal strength.... Digital devices can be further subdivided into single antenna(ARVA 9000), dual antenna(Tracker DTS, Barryvox) and even triple antenna(Pieps DSP).

The international frequency standard is now 457 kHz. At one time the US used a frequency of 2275 Hz. Old units using only that frequency are obsolete and should be replaced.

pieps: According to different sources consulted on Internet, "Pieps" or "PIEPS" is a trademark for an "avalanche rescue beacon." However, the brand was once synonymous with the term "avalanche rescue beacon" and used accordingly.

The helical aperture facsimile transmitter is fairly common on low-to mid-volume fax units. The original is roller fed over a flatbed copy platen and illuminated by an area lamp. Lens and mirror optics reflect and focus one scan line of the moving document at a time, first through a fixed horizontal slit aperture, and then through a rotating helical aperture. The rotating of the helical aperture produces one lateral scan of the original per revolution, with the passing light being focused a final time onto a photocell for conversion to an electrical signal.

... monochromatic UV photometer available from Du Pont; similar designs are widely used in modern LC. UV radiation at 254 nm from a low-pressure mercury lamp shines on the entrance of a flow cell and is transmitted through this sample cell and strikes the analytical prototube. Radiation from the source also is directed through a neutral-density filter, and then to the reference photocell. Current from these photocells is fed to log amplifiers, which generate an output linear with solute concentration. The output signal to the recorder normally is attenuated with a simple bridge network.
