The car is spotted over the unload position in the trackshed by a winch(cable carhaul), or by a shunt engine. It is then unloaded. The grain flows into the unloading pit where it remains until communication is received from the scale floor to indicate that the appropriate garner is empty. Free-Space Optics(also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air(free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units.

The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions.

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses.

A measure of the cleanliness of air is the atmospheric visibility. That visibility is generally degraded by atmospheric aerosols. The nephelometer is a device which measures the light scattering capability of the atmosphere and thus provides a measure of visibility. The light source in an integrating nephelometer provides excitation for particulates which scatter light into a cone between 10 and 170 degrees of the optic axis. The scattered light is detected with a photomultiplier. The signal is proportional to the scattering coefficient of the aerosol and empirical relations are available to relate this measure to the mass concentration of ambient aerosols.
