Subject field(s)

DEF

An instrument combining a pulsed laser transmitter and optical receiver(usually a telescope) with an electronic signal processing unit used for the detection and ranging of various distant targets in the atmosphere, analogous to the principles of operation of microwave radar.

CONT

The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems.

CONT

There are three basic generic types of lidar: range finders, DIAL, and Doppler lidars. Rande finder lidars are the simplest lidars. They are used to measure the distance from the lidar instrument to a solid or hard target Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) is used to measure chemical concentrations (such as ozone, water vapor, pollutants) in the atmosphere. Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target High-resolution DEMs with vertical accuracy as good as 10 cm can be created with Lidar. Lidar is also better able to map bare earth elevations in forested or vegetated areas than other methods because only a single laser pulse needs to be able to reach between trees and the ground.

OBS

lidar: Coined word for light detection and ranging.

  • Télédétection
DEF

… neutron counters … can serve as monitors for the photoneutron background noise and permit an on-line measurement of the parasitic signal. Thus, a careful choice of the moderator thicknesses enables these detectors to collect a considerable proportion of the internal parasitic photoneutrons. A proportionality coefficient leads to knowledge of the background noise occurring in the useful delayed signal measuring unit. The thus measured parasitic signal can be subtracted from the useful signal during data processing. Measurements can also take place with a single series of detectors located in the inner moderator coating.

CONT

Conventionally, tools to protect against overheating are provided in each structural element, and when the device is overheated, the tools output a predetermined signal to the CPU [central processing unit] and enable the frequency of operation to be decreased.

CONT

The main units of the AIC are : the focal plane assembly(FPA), equipped with a back-thinned illuminated CCD matrix and a front-end amplifier, provides the optical signal detection. A thermoelectric peltier cooler under the detector sets the operating point at-25°C ± 100 mK, the detection box(BD) which supplies the FPA with the necessary electrical signals to operate the CCD. It generates the clock waveforms from the VEU signals and filters the supplied voltage from the DSU, the video electronics unit(VEU) which processes the analog signal coming from the FPA, digitizes it on 12 bits before passing it on in serial processing to the science data processing subsystem(SDPSS). It also provides the DBs with the primary clock signal. The power conditioning of the VEU is located in the same unit, the detection supply unit(DSU) delivers relevant stabilized voltages to the 5 DUs and power to thermo-coolers from the main supply feeder of the instrument.
