In a communication system, the end-to-end delay of a packet may be defined as the time from its generation at the source to when the packet reaches its destination. In a packet-switched communication system, the delay for packets to travel from source to destination may vary depending upon various operating conditions, including but not limited to, channel conditions and network loading. Channel conditions refer to the quality of the wireless link. Some factors determining the quality of the wireless link are signal strength, speed of a mobile and/or physical obstructions. The end-to-end delay includes the delays introduced in the network and the various elements through which the packet passes. Many factors contribute to end-to-end delay. Variance in the end-to-end delay is referred to as jitter. 3, record 1, English, - end%2Dto%2Dend%20delay

The process of telemetry involves the transmission of data from a source to a receiver typically by radio frequency electromagnetic means. Telemetry has been successfully used in biomedical applications to permit the remote monitoring of patients. An example of a useful signal to be remotely monitored is the electrocardiogram(ECG). A transmitter attached to a patient sends an ECG signal to a remote receiver where it is decoded and monitored. Such biomedical telemetry permits the patient greater mobility than if he were attached to a stationary monitor, thus enhancing the therapeutic benefits from patient mobility. 1, record 2, English, - biomedical%20telemetry

We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. The adopted calibration procedure, only relying on radio stars measurement, does not require the use of a calibrated source external to the ground station. 3, record 8, English, - proximity%20communication%20equipment

3, record 8, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20communication%20PCE

Traditional Passive RFID [radio frequency identification] Tags rely on gathering energy from the RFID Reader's signal to wake up the integrated circuit(IC) and provide the backscatter required for identification. BAP RFID tags contain their own integrated power source, which is most commonly a battery. It's very important not to confuse BAP tags with Active RFID Tags. Active tags transmit a beacon at a defined interval. BAP tags do not transmit. The range is improved because no energy needs to be harvested from the RFID Reader to power the integrated circuit and all of the captured energy can be used for backscatter. 3, record 13, English, - battery%2Dassisted%20passive%20tag

What is neutron radiography? Neutron transmission radiography(NR) is based on the application of the universal law of attenuation of radiation passing through matter. Because different materials have different attenuation behaviour the neutron beam passing through a sample can be interpreted as a signal carrying information about the composition and structure of the sample. The basic experimental set-up is given by the following arrangement :source-collimator-object-collector. 3, record 14, English, - neutron%20radiography

The notion of critical bands, introduced by Fletcher(1940), explains the masking of a narrow band(sinusoidal) signal by a wideband noise source... One can think of a critical band as a frequency selective "channel" of psychoacoustic processing; only noise falling within the critical bandwidth can contribute to the masking of a narrow band signal. The mammalian auditory system consists of a whole series of critical bands, each filtering out a specific portion of the audio spectrum. 4, record 16, English, - critical%20bandwidth

There are a number of neutron counting techniques that can be employed for verification of uranium material … Both passive and active neutron measurement techniques are used. In the passive mode, neutrons from spontaneously fissioning isotopes, such as240Pu and244Cm, are measured. In the active mode, an external source of neutrons(from a neutron generator or isotopic source) first irradiates the sample. Then the neutron signal from fissionable isotopes, such as239Pu or235U, is measured. The single-axis inertial platform... The angular motions of the controlled member are sensed by the single-axis gyro. The output signal of the gyro is electronically processed and fed to the torque motor (TM) of the stable element and to the torque generator (TG) of the gyro. The problem is to determine how to do the electronic processing so that the controlled member maintains its orientation in spite of disturbances. The voltage across the output signal generator (SG) of the gyroscope is proportional to the integral of the angular velocity of the controlled member about the gyroscope’s input axis. Consequently, this signal is fed to an amplifier and then to a motor, which drives the controlled member in the proper direction to null the ouptut of the gyroscope. 1, record 20, English, - output%20signal%20generator

Bridgeable Amplifiers. Amplifier bridging is simply using 2 channels of an amplifier to drive a common load. For 2 channel amplifiers, one left signal and one right signal is used to drive a mono speaker load. Keep in mind that "mono" and "bridging" are not necessarily the same. Mono means that there's only one output signal. There could be more than one speaker but each speaker will have the same output. Bridging means that you are using more than one source of power to drive a load(speaker). The sources of power are one each output from either channel of the amplifier. 1, record 27, English, - bridgeable%20amplifier

Although real motion video is the holy grail of multimedia, it still is impractical using today's technology. The current method for working with video is by capturing and converting the analog signal from a video source and either manipulating the image's data(which is written to video tape) or compressing the data using compression techniques(either software-only compression or a combination of hardware and software compression). To display or capture a single screen of an NTSC [National Television System Committee] signal, you must have a video frame grabber.... Progressive-scan DVD players add an important additional step to create a better-looking picture-they generate a progressive-scan video signal through a process called de-interlacing(sometimes called "line-doubling"). The de-interlacer's first task is to look at the interlaced video signal as it leaves the MPEG decoder and determine whether its original source was 24-frame-per-second film or 30-frame-per-second video. The original frame rate determines the type of processing necessary to create an optimized progressive-scan signal. 3, record 35, English, - line%2Ddoubling

Indiana University Laboratory for Spectrochemistry. Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry. "Single-Crystal Scintillator-Based Array Detector for Sector-Field Mass Spectrometry, "[by] David A. Solyom. Beginning with the use of photographic plates in the first quarter of this century, array detectors have had a long history of usage in mass-spectrometric analysis. Array detectors are position-sensitive devices capable of independently measuring ion signals that are incident at different locations on the detector's face. Currently popular among the different types of array detectors available for mass spectrometry are microchannel-plate(s)(MCP) coupled with a phosphor.... The electrons emitted from the rear of the MCP strike the phosphor being held in close proximity(1mm) to the MCP. The phosphor screen is sensitive to the incident electrons and will emit photons in response. The number of emitted photons is proportional to the number of incident electrons and the location on the phosphor from which the photons are emitted coincides with the location of the incident electrons. The photons from the phosphor can then be converted into a proportional electronic signal by an imaging device such as a CCD or CID detector array. 2, record 36, English, - sector%20field%20mass%20spectrometry

As an electron microscope the instrument will be able to operate in both magnifying and scanning(SEM) modes. ... monochromatic UV photometer available from Du Pont; similar designs are widely used in modern LC. UV radiation at 254 nm from a low-pressure mercury lamp shines on the entrance of a flow cell and is transmitted through this sample cell and strikes the analytical prototube. Radiation from the source also is directed through a neutral-density filter, and then to the reference photocell. Current from these photocells is fed to log amplifiers, which generate an output linear with solute concentration. The output signal to the recorder normally is attenuated with a simple bridge network. 1, record 53, English, - monochromatic%20UV%20photometer

Basically, both detectors are similar to the simple device in design : their brass or stainless steel chambers function as cathodes; their anodes of the same material are supported coaxially within the chamber by a polytetrafluoroethylene insulator; both contain ports for introduction and escape of the chromatographic column gas effluent from the detectors; and each have a suitable source of alpha or beta radiation. 1, record 54, English, - triode%20detector

The theory of allogeneic reactivity... is derived from the proposal that T cell activation is a two signal process and that the antigen-presenting cell plays an active role in the process of T cell activation by providing both the source of antigen signal(signal one) and a source of the costimulator(CoS) activity which provides the second signal for T cell induction. 1, record 62, English, - allogeneic%20reactivity

A measure of the cleanliness of air is the atmospheric visibility. That visibility is generally degraded by atmospheric aerosols. The nephelometer is a device which measures the light scattering capability of the atmosphere and thus provides a measure of visibility. The light source in an integrating nephelometer provides excitation for particulates which scatter light into a cone between 10 and 170 degrees of the optic axis. The scattered light is detected with a photomultiplier. The signal is proportional to the scattering coefficient of the aerosol and empirical relations are available to relate this measure to the mass concentration of ambient aerosols. 1, record 63, English, - integrating%20nephelometer
