... the big bang does not fit all astronomers’ observations. The distribution of matter across space is too uniform to have come from the Big Bang as originally conceived. So in the 1970s, cosmologists postulated a sudden enlargement of the universe, called inflation, that occurred in the first minuscule fraction of a second after the Big Bang... Only inflation can amplify the primordial gravitational wave signal enough to make it detectable. If primordial gravitational waves have been seen, it means that inflation must have taken place. 3, record 1, English, - primordial%20gravitational%20wave%20signal

The acquisition time course is often over several minutes for DCE [dynamic contrast enhancement], while DSC [dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast] is about 60 seconds in length. This time allows for measurement of the wash-in and wash-out of the contrast material in the EES [extracellular extravascular space]. There are several methods for image interpretation. The simplest method is to examine the signal intensity curves over time for a region of interest. The rate or slope of the wash-in and wash-out curve for multiple regions of interest can be visually assessed. 2, record 2, English, - wash%2Dout%20curve

We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. The adopted calibration procedure, only relying on radio stars measurement, does not require the use of a calibrated source external to the ground station. 3, record 5, English, - proximity%20communication%20equipment

3, record 5, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20communication%20PCE

Free-Space Optics(also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air(free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units. 1, record 12, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions. 7, record 12, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics

Satellite navigation.... which has been developed over the last thirty years or so, essentially for military purposes originally, enables anyone with a receiver capable of picking up signals emitted by a constellation of satellites to instantly determine their position in time and space very accurately. The operating principle is simple : the satellites in the constellation are fitted with an atomic clock measuring time very accurately. The satellites emit personalised signals indicating the precise time the signal leaves the satellite. The ground receiver, incorporated for example into a mobile phone, has in its memory the precise details of the orbits of all the satellites in the constellation. By reading the incoming signal, it can thus recognise the particular satellite, determine the time taken by the signal to arrive and calculate the distance from the satellite. Once the ground receiver receives the signals from at least four satellites simultaneously, it can calculate the exact position. 2, record 16, English, - satellite%20navigation

The Common Berthing Mechanism(CBM) is a functional structure that is used to connect the components of the International Space Station(except the Russian modules).... A CBM is composed of two parts, an active CBM that uses an electric motor to make connection, and a passive CBM. To connect these two parts, an astronaut first uses the robot arm to grapple the module on which the passive CBM is attached and move it close to the active CBM. A limit switch located on the active CBM senses when the passive CBM is close enough to the active CBM and generates a signal indicating that preparation for berthing is completed. Next, the active CBM extends four capture latches to catch the passive CBM. The 16 power bolts then extend from the active CBM and are inserted into the holes of the passive CBM, completing the connection. When the pressurized modules are connected, a big O-ring seal made of special rubber will seal the CBMs to maintain air-tightness inside the connected modules. 2, record 17, English, - common%20berthing%20mechanism

Remote heat sensing techniques evolved from space technology developments related to weather satellites can be used to detect comparative heat energy losses from roofs, walls, windows, and so on. A method called thermography is defined as the conversion of a temperature pattern detected on a surface by contrast into an image called a thermogram... Thermovision is defined as the technique of utilizing the infrared radiation from a surface which varies with the surface temperatures, to produce a thermal picture or thermogram. A camera can scan the area in question and focus the radiation on a sensitive detector which in turn converts it to an electronic signal. 2, record 27, English, - thermovision

The auto-tracking mode uses the conical scanning principle. With a scanner situated in the antenna feed, the peak of pattern direction describes a cone in space around the geometric axis of the antenna.
