Additive synthesis is, conceptually at least, the simplest of the many sound synthesis techniques. Simply put, the idea is to add signals(usually sine waves of differing amplitudes, frequencies, and phases) together to form a sound of interest... Subtractive synthesis is the dual of additive synthesis. The basic idea is to start with a signal rich in harmonic content, and selectively "remove" signals to create a desired effect.

A method of speech synthesis that consists in chaining synthesized or prerecorded speech units.

Synthesized speech units may be obtained by summing up waveforms at several harmonics of the intended pitch weighted by the spectral prominence at that frequency. Prerecorded speech units may be phonemes, diphones, syllables, words, etc.

Generalmente, la síntesis concatenativa produce el habla sintetizada con el sonido más natural. The developing discipline of computer music encompassed a variety of areas of investigation, most of which had origins in the 1950s or 1960s. Among these were digital sound synthesis, digital audio signal processing, algorithmic music composition, music information retrieval, digital controllers for music performance, computer-based editing and printing of music notation, and computer-assisted research in musical acoustics and psychoacoustics.

An electronic card adding sound capabilities to a computer system.

The best audio boards are designed with digital signal processor chips that provide more efficient sampling and contain separate circuits to bring in synthesized digital sound directly through a MIDI interface. In many cases audio boards are integrated with full-motion video boards... All audio boards offered for multimedia applications record and play back sounds by digital sampling but may have different sampling rate ranges. Most also include separate engines for music synthesis, MIDI ports, and a software mixer to adjust relative volumes of sampled sounds, CD-Audio, external audio and microphone input.

There are a number of recognized sound board products on the market today which have established common standards recognized by most multi-media software and CD-ROMs. By selecting one of these boards you are assured that you have a system where all of the applicable pieces have been developed based upon a common standard and the likelihood of conflicts occurring is minimized.
