An instrument combining a pulsed laser transmitter and optical receiver(usually a telescope) with an electronic signal processing unit used for the detection and ranging of various distant targets in the atmosphere, analogous to the principles of operation of microwave radar.

The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems.

There are three basic generic types of lidar: range finders, DIAL, and Doppler lidars. Rande finder lidars are the simplest lidars. They are used to measure the distance from the lidar instrument to a solid or hard target Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) is used to measure chemical concentrations (such as ozone, water vapor, pollutants) in the atmosphere. Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target High-resolution DEMs with vertical accuracy as good as 10 cm can be created with Lidar. Lidar is also better able to map bare earth elevations in forested or vegetated areas than other methods because only a single laser pulse needs to be able to reach between trees and the ground.

A sweep ramp provides the tuning voltage for a voltage-tuned oscillator and is simultaneously applied to the horizontal-deflection system of a cathode-ray-tube display. The local-oscillator frequency is mixed with the input signal to produce an intermediate frequency (IF). The IF is detected, filtered, and applied to the vertical deflection plates of the CRT [cathode-ray-tube].

The receiver has to have suitable pass band characteristics to deal with the pulse modulation side bands, and must be free from paralysis following reception of a large signal... Its output is rectified and amplified and applied to the cathode-ray tube display, either as a deflexion or an intensity modulation. The cathode-ray tube is also supplied with a range time base..., synchronized to the pulse transmission, and suitable calibration devices... are usually also necessary. The form of the display unit depends on the particular radar application, and on what coordinate or coordinates other than range are to be presented. For example, in the plan position indicator the time base starts from the centre of the tube and goes radically outwards in a direction depending on the azimuth of the beamed aerials(which sweeps continuously), and the signal is presented as a spot intensifier.

A technology that uses light propagating in free space to transmit data between two points.

Free-Space Optics(also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air(free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units.

CONT

The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions.

Because the O2 sensor must be pre-heated to function, many newer units contain a little 12 volt heater that brings it up to temperature sooner, offering better fuel economy and driveability earlier. The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.

The unit of measurement of environmental noise is the decibel(dB). To better approximate the range of sensitivity of the human ear to sounds of different frequencies, the A-weighted decibel scale was devised. Because the human ear is less sensitive to low-frequency sounds, the A-scale de-emphasizes these frequencies by incorporating frequency weighting of the sound signal. When the A-scale is used, the decibel levels are shown as dBA. On this scale, the range of human hearing extends from about 3 dBA to about 140 dBA. A 10-dBA increase is perceived by most people as a doubling of the sound level. The smallest change that can be heard is about 2 to 3 dBA.
