The essence of the calibration process is to measure the output(voltage) of the probe at known velocities and temperatures. Then a curve can be fitted through the data points. This curve can be used in the real measurements to calculate the velocity from the output signal of the anemometer.... The calibrations are performed in a calibration tunnel, from which the geometry is accurately known(the outgoing flow is laminar). The velocity at the outlet of the tunnel is thus known with a high precision. 3, record 2, English, - calibration%20tunnel

In transmission engineering, most often it would be rather impractical to characterize the magnitude of signals directly by a numerical value in volts or watts. Instead, a logarithmic measure is used, expressed in "dB" [decibel], to characterize the signal magnitude in relation to some chosen reference value. Designations commonly used are "power-level difference, ""voltage level difference, "etc., all expressed in "dB. " 2, record 4, English, - voltage%20level%20difference

2, record 4, French, - diff%C3%A9rence%20de%20niveau%20de%20tension

Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A corona is generated by applying a high-frequency high-voltage signal to an electrode, which is separated from a grounded surface by an air gap and a dielectric. No current will pass through the air gap until there is enough voltage to affect the electrical breakdown of the air, typically 3, 000 to 5, 000 volts per millimeter. The corona treatment of the substrate results from the bombardment and penetration of these ions into the molecular structure at the surface of the substrate. It is the oxidation and polar-group formation in the surface molecules, in conjunction with the etching of the surface from the ion bombardment that induces the increase in surface energy of the treated material. 3, record 7, English, - corona%20treatment%20system

In the last decades, imaging membrane potential has become a fruitful approach to study neural circuits, especially in invertebrate preparations with large, resilient neurons. At the same time, particularly in mammalian preparations, voltage imaging methods suffer from poor signal to noise and secondary side effects, and they fall short of providing single-cell resolution when imaging of the activity of neuronal populations. As an introduction to these techniques, we briefly review different voltage imaging methods(including organic fluorophores, SHG [second harmonic generation] chromophores, genetic indicators, hybrid, nanoparticles, and intrinsic approaches) and illustrate some of their applications to neuronal biophysics and mammalian circuit analysis. 1, record 9, English, - voltage%20imaging

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels. 1, record 13, English, - energy%20spectroscopy

The boron-lined compensated ionization chamber is a differential chamber [i. e. connected in electrical opposition] formed by three electrodes which define two elementary chambers. The first elementary chamber is located between the positive high voltage polarization electrode and the signal electrode which collects the charges developed by ionization in the gas. The surfaces of the electrodes of this elementary chamber are covered with a boron lining. This elementary chamber is therefore sensitive to neutrons and to gamma rays. The second elementary chamber is located between the signal electrode and the compensation electrode which receives a negative polarization voltage. As this elementary chamber has no boron lining, it is sensitive to gamma rays only. 1, record 14, English, - differential%20chamber

The single-axis inertial platform... The angular motions of the controlled member are sensed by the single-axis gyro. The output signal of the gyro is electronically processed and fed to the torque motor(TM) of the stable element and to the torque generator(TG) of the gyro. The problem is to determine how to do the electronic processing so that the controlled member maintains its orientation in spite of disturbances. The voltage across the output signal generator(SG) of the gyroscope is proportional to the integral of the angular velocity of the controlled member about the gyroscope's input axis. Consequently, this signal is fed to an amplifier and then to a motor, which drives the controlled member in the proper direction to null the ouptut of the gyroscope. 1, record 17, English, - output%20signal%20generator

Constant-current modulation [is] a system of amplitude modulation in which the output circuits of the signal amplifier and carrier-wave generator or amplifier are directly and conductively coupled by a common inductor. The inductor has an ideally infinite impedance to the signal frequencies and therefore maintains the common plate-supply current of the two devices constant. The signal-frequency voltage thus appearing across the common inductor also modulates the plate supply to the carrier generator or amplifier, with corresponding modulation of the carrier output. 5, record 21, English, - constant%2Dcurrent%20modulation

Class-A operation. Class-A amplifier operation is characterized by a conduction period of the output current(collector or drain) of 360°. That is, the operating point is chosen to have a constant voltage and current. In effect, the amplifier power is on all the time. This is referred to as linear operation. By operating in the linear region of the transistor's characteristics, the amplified signal suffers minimum distortion. This comes at a price of inefficiency in the amplifier. The theoretical maximum possible efficiency of a class-A amplifier is 50%, but due to linearity requirements of the applications, the efficiency may be no more that 25%. 4, record 22, English, - class%2DA%20operation

An amplifier-based system having pulsed output includes an amplifier for amplifying a time varying voltage signal to produce an output voltage signal. A voltage-to-current(V-1) converter converts the output voltage signal into a current signal. An output stage including a current integrator integrates the current signal to generate an integrated voltage. An amplitude to time converter generates a pulse train from the integrated voltage, wherein a timing of the pulses in the pulse train represents the original time varying voltage signal. The pulse train representation permits transmission and accurate remote reconstruction of the original time varying voltage signal, such as signals generated by electrodes implanted inside a subject, including neural signals. 2, record 27, English, - amplitude%2Dto%2Dtime%20converter

The main units of the AIC are : the focal plane assembly(FPA), equipped with a back-thinned illuminated CCD matrix and a front-end amplifier, provides the optical signal detection. A thermoelectric peltier cooler under the detector sets the operating point at-25°C ± 100 mK, the detection box(BD) which supplies the FPA with the necessary electrical signals to operate the CCD. It generates the clock waveforms from the VEU signals and filters the supplied voltage from the DSU, the video electronics unit(VEU) which processes the analog signal coming from the FPA, digitizes it on 12 bits before passing it on in serial processing to the science data processing subsystem(SDPSS). It also provides the DBs with the primary clock signal. The power conditioning of the VEU is located in the same unit, the detection supply unit(DSU) delivers relevant stabilized voltages to the 5 DUs and power to thermo-coolers from the main supply feeder of the instrument. 2, record 38, English, - analog%20imaging%20chain

When specifying a mass flow control system, the first consideration is whether the process will take place at constant system pressure, constant throughput, and/or predetermined gas flow ratio. Another important consideration is whether system control will be automatic(microprocessor) or manual(setpoint potentiometers).... There are three major state-of-the-art systems that can be identified. The first uses a flowmeter(s)... as the primary transducer(s) to monitor mass flow. Using this format, a signal is compared in control circuitry to a setpoint signal. This generates an error voltage which is used to drive a valve, thus continuously controlling the flow. The second major type of system uses a pressure transducer as the primary sensing element. System pressure is held either constant or varied at a predetermined rate by controlling the mass flow rate of process gases. This leads to a third type of system that slaves valves and flowmeters to the primary sensing. 1, record 46, English, - mass%20flow%20controller

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer. 1, record 48, English, - particle%20counter

Electrical resistivity fish counters... counting fish by noting changes in the electrical resistivity of water through which they swim was pioneered by Lethlean. The basis of his approach was to apply a low voltage across two volumes of water through which the fish to be counted are constrained to pass and detect the changes in their resistances caused by the presence of the fish... This device [electrical resistivity fish counter] amplifies the "out of balance" voltage caused by the presence of fish, passes this signal through logic circuitry and activates an appropriately labelled digit meter. 1, record 62, English, - electrical%20resistivity%20fish%20counter

3, record 62, French, - compteur%20%C3%A0%20r%C3%A9sistivit%C3%A9%20pour%20poissons

For example, if a signal changes from 9. 999V to 10. 012V, a four digit DVM without overranging could measure the first voltage as "9. 999V", but would require a range change to make the second measurement with a resulting reading of "10. 01V. The 0. 002V change would not be seen. With overranging, the second measurement could be made as "10. 012V" with no loss of resolution. The [DFM] meter indicates the distortion factor, which is the ratio of the rms total distortion to the amplitude of the fundamental frequency, including harmonics. 2, record 73, English, - distortion%20factor
Record number: 73, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A common measurement is total harmonic distortion(thd) where the fundamental of a very low distortion sine-wave test signal is removed by a steep notch filter. The summed harmonics that remain are then measured as a voltage of the fundamental at the required test power of the amplifier.(When measured in this manner the term thd is not really correct since the distortion also has the amplifier noise added to it within the test passband. The correct term is distortion factor).(GRAEL, 1977, p. 326). 3, record 73, English, - distortion%20factor
