The essence of the calibration process is to measure the output(voltage) of the probe at known velocities and temperatures. Then a curve can be fitted through the data points. This curve can be used in the real measurements to calculate the velocity from the output signal of the anemometer.... The calibrations are performed in a calibration tunnel, from which the geometry is accurately known(the outgoing flow is laminar). The velocity at the outlet of the tunnel is thus known with a high precision.

In transmission engineering, most often it would be rather impractical to characterize the magnitude of signals directly by a numerical value in volts or watts. Instead, a logarithmic measure is used, expressed in "dB" [decibel], to characterize the signal magnitude in relation to some chosen reference value. Designations commonly used are "power-level difference, ""voltage level difference, "etc., all expressed in "dB. "

[An] electronic [device] that increases the adhesion properties of a substrate [by modifying its] surface energy ... to make it more compatible with ink, adhesives or coatings.

OBS

A corona is generated by applying a high-frequency high-voltage signal to an electrode, which is separated from a grounded surface by an air gap and a dielectric. No current will pass through the air gap until there is enough voltage to affect the electrical breakdown of the air, typically 3, 000 to 5, 000 volts per millimeter. The corona treatment of the substrate results from the bombardment and penetration of these ions into the molecular structure at the surface of the substrate. It is the oxidation and polar-group formation in the surface molecules, in conjunction with the etching of the surface from the ion bombardment that induces the increase in surface energy of the treated material.

In the last decades, imaging membrane potential has become a fruitful approach to study neural circuits, especially in invertebrate preparations with large, resilient neurons. At the same time, particularly in mammalian preparations, voltage imaging methods suffer from poor signal to noise and secondary side effects, and they fall short of providing single-cell resolution when imaging of the activity of neuronal populations. As an introduction to these techniques, we briefly review different voltage imaging methods(including organic fluorophores, SHG [second harmonic generation] chromophores, genetic indicators, hybrid, nanoparticles, and intrinsic approaches) and illustrate some of their applications to neuronal biophysics and mammalian circuit analysis.

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels.

The boron-lined compensated ionization chamber is a differential chamber [i. e. connected in electrical opposition] formed by three electrodes which define two elementary chambers. The first elementary chamber is located between the positive high voltage polarization electrode and the signal electrode which collects the charges developed by ionization in the gas. The surfaces of the electrodes of this elementary chamber are covered with a boron lining. This elementary chamber is therefore sensitive to neutrons and to gamma rays. The second elementary chamber is located between the signal electrode and the compensation electrode which receives a negative polarization voltage. As this elementary chamber has no boron lining, it is sensitive to gamma rays only.

The single-axis inertial platform... The angular motions of the controlled member are sensed by the single-axis gyro. The output signal of the gyro is electronically processed and fed to the torque motor(TM) of the stable element and to the torque generator(TG) of the gyro. The problem is to determine how to do the electronic processing so that the controlled member maintains its orientation in spite of disturbances. The voltage across the output signal generator(SG) of the gyroscope is proportional to the integral of the angular velocity of the controlled member about the gyroscope's input axis. Consequently, this signal is fed to an amplifier and then to a motor, which drives the controlled member in the proper direction to null the ouptut of the gyroscope.

When specifying a mass flow control system, the first consideration is whether the process will take place at constant system pressure, constant throughput, and/or predetermined gas flow ratio. Another important consideration is whether system control will be automatic(microprocessor) or manual(setpoint potentiometers).... There are three major state-of-the-art systems that can be identified. The first uses a flowmeter(s)... as the primary transducer(s) to monitor mass flow. Using this format, a signal is compared in control circuitry to a setpoint signal. This generates an error voltage which is used to drive a valve, thus continuously controlling the flow. The second major type of system uses a pressure transducer as the primary sensing element. System pressure is held either constant or varied at a predetermined rate by controlling the mass flow rate of process gases. This leads to a third type of system that slaves valves and flowmeters to the primary sensing.

The typical particle counter for metering the amount of particulate matter in clean work station air is an optical assembly. Air is drawn into and through the optical subassembly of the particle counter until a pre-set volume of air has been seen. The particles which are drawn into this optical subassembly cause a pulse of light to be scattered for each particle present. The light pulse is sensed by a detector which converts the pulse to an electrical voltage signal. Each signal is cumulatively counted, for the pre-set volume of air. From the amplitude of the voltage, the size of each particle can be determined. All particle counters consist of three basic subassemblies. These are the optical subassembly which "sees" the particles, a pump subassembly which draws the air stream into and through the optical subassembly, and an electronic subassembly for converting each particle size/unit number to an electrical signal. Also available, usually as an option, is some form of printer.

The active element is a twisted bourdon tube with a flat magnetic armature attached which rotates when pressure is applied, thus changing the air gap between it and the sensing circuit, changing the inductance. The resultant signal is used to modulate a carrier voltage.

DEF

For example, if a signal changes from 9. 999V to 10. 012V, a four digit DVM without overranging could measure the first voltage as "9. 999V", but would require a range change to make the second measurement with a resulting reading of "10. 01V. The 0. 002V change would not be seen. With overranging, the second measurement could be made as "10. 012V" with no loss of resolution. Taken from Hewlett-Packard.

The [DFM] meter indicates the distortion factor, which is the ratio of the rms total distortion to the amplitude of the fundamental frequency, including harmonics.

OBS

A common measurement is total harmonic distortion(thd) where the fundamental of a very low distortion sine-wave test signal is removed by a steep notch filter. The summed harmonics that remain are then measured as a voltage of the fundamental at the required test power of the amplifier.(When measured in this manner the term thd is not really correct since the distortion also has the amplifier noise added to it within the test passband. The correct term is distortion factor).(GRAEL, 1977, p. 326).
