... noise has its most deleterious effect on reception quality when it occurs in the input circuitry of the receiver, since this is usually where the basic signal-to-noise ratio is established. The generation of noise in this area is principally caused by thermal agitation in resistive input components. When the incoming signal is too weak to override this noise, a visual effect is displayed on the picture tube that is commonly referred to as snow. Although there are other types of noise that produce different visual effects, snow is the most common visual effect. 3, record 6, English, - snow

There's a convenient way to remember the significance of D[ star]:. Recall that it is the signal-to-noise ratio when one watt of radiation is incident on a detector with a sensitive area of 1 cm² and the noise is measured with an electrical bandwidth of 1 herts. Thus, the term D[ star]: is a normalized detectivity that's convenient for comparing the performance of detectors with different areas when used in circuits with different bandwidths. 2, record 7, English, - specific%20detectivity

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels. 1, record 10, English, - energy%20spectroscopy

Pulse Compression. In collecting the SAR data, a long-duration linear FM [frequency modulation] pulse is transmitted. This allows the pulse energy to be transmitted with a lower peak power. The linear FM pulse has the property that, when filtered with a matched filter, the result is a narrow pulse in which all the pulse energy has been collected to the peak value. Thus, when a matched filter is applied to the received echo, it is as if a narrow pulse were transmitted, with its corresponding range resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. 3, record 20, English, - pulse%20compression

2, record 20, French, - compression%20d%27impulsion
